West Side Story Remake

UPDATE: New details have surfaced indicating that Indiana Jones 5 will still be made before the remake of West Side Story. Get the new details at the end of the story.

Steven Spielberg just delivered the Best Picture nominee The Post at the end of 2017, and in a couple months we’ll see his latest blockbuster hit the big screen in the form of the adaptation of Ready Player One (find out more about that movie here). After that, it appears Steven Spielberg is going to tackle something he hasn’t before: a musical.

For a few years, there have been rumblings of Spielberg wanting to remake the classic big screen musical West Side Story, which won 10 statuettes at the Oscars after debuting in 1961. More recently, it sounded like Spielberg was going to choose between a remake of the classic musical and the new Indiana Jones sequel for his next project, and it seems like his choice has been made. La La Land Movie References

When the Academy Awards are presented on February 26 on ABC, we’ll see how many awards La La Land can take home out of the record-setting 14 nominations the film received earlier this week. If you haven’t seen the movie yet (it’s my favorite of 2016), it’s playing in theaters everywhere and you need to see it immediately.

After you see La La Land (go ahead, we’ll wait), you might want to check out a video put together by editor Sara Preciado, who took the time to create a side-by-side video with scenes from the 2016 musical compared to the classical musicals that director Damien Chazelle was trying to emulate.

Is Spielberg, credited for creating the summer blockbuster with 1975’s Jaws, no longer the big box office draw that he once was?

West Side Story Remake

Over two years ago, Steven Spielberg grabbed the attention of musical fans when news surfaced that he was interested in potentially remaking the classic West Side Story. The musical hit Broadway in 1957 and was turned into a feature film in 1961. Since then it’s been a staple of the stage, revived several times over the years with the most recent being in the last couple years in the United Kingdom. And now it appears Spielberg is making some progress in getting this new take on West Side Story off the ground, but with a packed schedule over the next few years, it might not happen anytime soon.
