What can we make of Violet & Daisy, which seems to run with the same semi-arthouse tendencies of Hanna or The Professional?
The movie shot in 2010 and played TIFF to varied reviews in 2011. Cinedigm picked it up for distribution last fall, and will release the movie in June. Perhaps the company decided to hold the film until after this year’s opening of The Host. This film does, after all, star Saoirse Ronan (of The Host) along with Alexis Bleidel and James Gandolfini. The girls play teen assassins; he’s their mark.
If The Host had been a hit, surfing in its wake would have been a good idea. The Host was not a hit, and so now Violet & Daisy has to make its own way as a bit of summer counter-programming. (Putting a bit of distance between this and Hanna was also not a bad idea.) Or perhaps it seemed like a good idea to wait until this could exist in proximity to Spring Breakers and The Bling Ring. Oddly enough, the movies all seem to be of a piece.
The trailer has some mysterious images and enticing moments, but I can’t quite get a sense of what the movie really is. Check it out below, and have a look at the great poster we debuted last week. Read More »

Everyone has to die and, if you’re going to be killed, getting knocked off by Alexis Bledel and Saoirse Ronan is a pretty good way to go. They’re the stars of Violet & Daisy, the directorial debut of Oscar-winning screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher. In the film, Bledel and Ronan play teen assassins forced to reexamine their carefree, killer lives when they run into a shut-in played by James Gandolfini.
It opens on June 7 and /Film is proud to exclusively debut the film’s one sheet, which you can see a tease of above. Read More »
Saoirse Ronan isn’t just in one movie about a teen assassin. The first one is Joe Wright’s Hanna (trailer), in which the actress plays a girl raised by her ex-CIA father (Eric Bana) to undertake a cross-continental assassination mission.
The other is Violet & Daisy, which was written by Oscar-winning Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, who is also making his directorial debut. The film co-stars Alexis Bledel and James Gandolfini. It shot last year and photos and video have been elusive, but some first snippets of footage have come online via the demo reel for the film’s cinematographer, Vanja Cernjul. Check out the very nice-looking moving images after the break. Read More »
In the race to make a hockey comedy the clear winner will be Goon, which stars Jay Baruchel and Seann William Scott. (Runner-up might be Kevin Smith’s Hit Somebody.) Goon is based on a script by Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg, which in turn was inspired by the book Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey Into Minor League Hockey. Now Eugene Levy is joining the cast as the film shoots in Winnipeg. We don’t know his role, but prepare to see a character that looks quite a lot like many other Eugene Levy characters. He’s good, but not a guy you hire when you’re trying to work out of the box.
The film is about ” a slacker and born brawler who’s invited to join a minor league hockey team. Persuaded by his best friend to accept the offer, he becomes the hero of the team — until the league’s reigning goon decides to take him down.” Liev Schreiber also stars. [Variety]

Difficult to believe that, just as Joe Wright’s film Hanna, about a teenage girl trained as an assassin, is readying to hit theaters, post-production will be under way on Violet & Daisy, about two teenage girls trained as assassins. And now, confirming a report from a few days ago, we know that Alexis Bledel will co-star as one of the two killer lassies, alongside Saoirse Ronan. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
If you read that Saoirse Ronan is going to star in a film about a teenage killer, you might immediately flash back to news about Hanna, the film directed by Joe Wright in which Ronan plays a 14-year old trained by her father to be a killing machine. That film is dated for 2011, and we haven’t seen a trailer or much more than a photo.
That, however, is not the film this article is about. But if you took Hanna and squished it together with The Professional, you might end up with something that sounds a lot like Violet & Daisy, the film written and directed by Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher. Read More »
