Earlier this year we got two superhero movies in which the good guys are battling good guys: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War. The two films weren’t much alike, but they were both relatively somber affairs, full of anger and pain and sorrow. But what happens when you’ve got bad guys fighting even worse guys? You get something like the anarchic glee of the latest Suicide Squad international trailer.
Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, who has the genius idea to force a bunch of supervillains to go on a dangerous mission for the U.S. government. Margot Robbie stars as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and of course Jared Leto as the Joker. Watch the new Suicide Squad international trailer below.

The release of Suicide Squad is still a couple months away, but Warner Bros. Pictures has already begun the onslaught of marketing on television with a batch of TV spots that debuted earlier this week during the NBA Finals. There’s a lot riding on the next film from the DC Comics cinematic universe after the studio was not happy with the box office performance and reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year. Thankfully, everything we’ve seen so far paints this as the DC Comics movie that will make fans and general audiences alike very happy.

It’s been almost a decade since Denzel Washington has directed a feature film, which is a bit of a shame, since his two directorial efforts, Antwone Fischer and The Great Debaters, showed he’s capable of far more than acting. After starring in August Wilson‘s Fences on Broadway, the actor has decided to return to the director’s chair and bring Wilson’s story to the big screen.
Get the latest updates on Washington’s Fences adaptation, including new stars and a new studio home, below.

You’ve probably already seen the new Suicide Squad trailer that was unveiled yesterday. You may have already seen it a few times because it is one seriously impressive piece of marketing that showcases a tone and style that no one saw coming. Warner Bros. has obviously taken a few cues from how Marvel sold Guardians of the Galaxy to introduce this gang of misfits and oddballs to a wider audience and it works absurdly well. Director David Ayer has cooked up something that takes place in the same world as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but it looks completely different in just about every way.
While the trailer does a fairly good job of establishing the basic premise (the government recruits a bunch of imprisoned DC comics super villains into a task force that is forced to go on dangerous missions), it doesn’t delve into the plot specifics. At the same time, it’s bursting with mysterious images, insane moments, and surprising beats. This thing begs for a frame-by-frame breakdown.
And your wish is my command.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
While everyone knows Denzel Washington for his two-time Oscar-winning acting skills, you may forget that the actor has also gotten behind the camera as a director for Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters. And now he’s preparing for another stint wearing several hats on the movie set as director, producer and star of a new project at HBO.
During An Evening With Denzel Washington & Dr. Todd Boyd Friday night at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, the actor revealed that he recently made a deal with HBO to adapt August Wilson‘s 2010 Broadway play Fences into a film at HBO. And that’s just the beginning of a whole batch of HBO projects based on Wilson’s work.

When Viola Davis was first rumored to be in the running for the role of Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, reports were that the only holdup could be the schedule for her ABC television show How to Get Away With Murder. On Tuesday, August 4, Davis was on a panel with cast and producers of other ABC dramas Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy.
After the panel, I approached Davis with a group of reporters and asked her how difficult it was to coordinate Suicide Squad with ABC. Surprisingly, given the reports of her schedule in flux, she said ABC actually wanted her to do the movie. Read More »

One of the buzziest trailers to come out of this year’s Comic-Con was Suicide Squad. As Russ put it, the footage teased “a viciously detailed film, with a real eye for keeping things grim and weird.” It won the interest of fans and non-fans alike. Which is all well and good for Warner Bros. — but if you fall into the latter category, you might’ve found yourself as confused by the trailer as you were intrigued.
While characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are familiar to just about everyone on the known planet, that’s definitely not the case with Suicide Squad. Fortunately, with over a year to go until the film’s release, there’s plenty of room to get your bearings, and with our help you’ll be caught up in no time at all. Hit the jump for our rundown of the Suicide Squad characters. Read More »
