Peter and Bobby Farrelly are still on the hunt for their new Three Stooges. The cast was once assembled, with Benicio del Toro set to play Moe, Jim Carrey set for Curly and Sean Penn as Larry. But that splintered, starting when Sean Penn took a sabbatical from work, and late last year the film moved from MGM to Fox, where it is fast-tracked to shoot this spring.
But, as of now, there are no Stooges. Johnny Knoxville and Andy Samberg have been tenuously linked to roles, and the brothers have recently said that Benicio del Toro is still an option for Moe. Now, in an interview to promote Hall Pass, the brothers have mentioned an unlikely collection of additional options: Woody Harrelson, Larry David, Hank Azaria and Justin Timberlake. Read More »
Earlier this week we heard a great audio recording of Peter and Bobby Farrelly talking Badass Digest through a comic sequence in their planned big screen version of The Three Stooges. The action involved a nun, and now there is a possible actress for the role: the Farrellys want Cher. In addition, they say (still) that Benicio del Toro, who was once cast as Moe, isn’t out of the running just yet. Read More »
The Farrelly Brothers are in promotion mode for their upcoming film Hall Pass, but the movie everyone keeps wanting to know about is The Three Stooges. Namely: What the hell is up with that thing, anyway?
Last we checked in on the film, we had learned that the casting of Johnny Knoxville and Andy Samberg in the film were strictly rumors, and that the film remained “wide open to everybody”. Now they’ve shared additional details about the picture, which you can read after the break. Read More »

If you were mystified by yesterday’s report about the possible involvement of Johnny Knoxville and Andy Samberg in the Farrelly Brothers upcoming The Three Stooges, you weren’t alone. Peter Farrelly says “You don’t want people to think ‘they already cast that thing,’ because we haven’t…It’s wide open to everybody.” Read More »
Last month, the feature film version of The Three Stooges moved from the struggling MGM to 20th Century Fox, along with writer/directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly. Once attached stars Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro were long gone but with the change of studio, the movie once again had a pulse. That pulse is now quickening according to The Wrap who reports that “advances have been made, representatives have been approached and discussions have taken place” for Johnny Knoxville, Andy Samberg and Australian comedian Shane Jacobson to play Moe, Larry and Curly. Looks like the movie revamp of The Three Stooges isn’t as dead as former cast member Jim Carrey thought. After a decade of flitting from one studio to another, the film was lodged at MGM. With that company’s bankruptcy clearing up, a path has led the project to Fox, which will put it into production on March 14, 2011. Peter and Bobby Farrelly will direct from the script they penned with Mike Cerrone.
The big question is: who will star? Read More »
The original casting for the Farrelly Brothers‘ The Three Stooges film seemed like it was too crazy to be true, and sure enough, it was. The line-up that once included Sean Penn as Larry, Benicio Del Toro as Moe, and Jim Carrey as Curly quickly fell apart, leaving only Benicio Del Toro remaining from the trio. We know Penn’s reasoning for departing from the project was, according to him, based on a desire to concentrate on his family, but what of Jim Carrey? Why did he drop out?
Find out his answer after the break. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
In June, a gossip columnist suggested to the Farrelly Brothers that Paul Giamatti play Larry in The Three Stooges after Sean Penn backed out of the role due to family issues. Bobby Farrelly admitted to the paper that Giamatti would not only be “a sensational Larry,” but they’d “love to have Paul.” Unfortunately “an offer” has already been sent out “to someone else.” Giamatti who was also in town at the Nantucket Film Festival with his comedy Cold Souls, didn’t seem too responsive to the idea.
“They were always so dark and grim. And Moe was this ancient man with a little boy’s haircut. But Larry? I don’t get Larry. He’s strange. He’s sort of the blank guy in the middle.”
The whole thing seemed rather speculative at the time, but it appears the tides have apparently changed. The Boston Globe now reports that the Farrelly Brothers has not only signed Giamatti to take over the role of Larry, but Jim Carrey is no longer attached to play Curly, even though he was reportly gaining a bunch of weight for the part. No word on a replacement for Carrey just yet. Benicio Del Toro is still attached to play Moe. I’m starting to think that this film may never happen, which might be for the better.
Last week Sean Penn announced that he would be backing out of the Farrelly Brothers comedy The Three Stooges and another project to deal with family issues. So who will replace Penn as Larry in redo of the famous comedy trio? How about Paul Giamatti?
