The Mummy 3

themummy3photo21.jpgRob Cohen has published a few new photos from the set of The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, including one of Maria Bello as the new Evelyn (yuck, where is Rachel!?).

I wrote earlier today that I actually enjoyed the first Fast and the Furious film (a comment I’m sure to get a lot of flack for), also a Cohen project. I also very much had fun in the first Mummy film, but where can this series go? It’s basically an Indiana Jones knock off with a less talented cast, crew and oh yeah, a sad supernatural Mummy character, which in the third film is played by Jet Li (yes, that Jet Li).

And Cohen’s filmography has suffered in recent years (xXx, Stealth). I keep having to remind myself that Cohen once made Dragonheart. So I don’t have much faith in The Mummy 3, but in this case I hope I’m proved wrong.

I have recently gotten the criticism that I’ve been far too negative. But the truth is I go into every screening wanting to love the movie, wanting to be surprised. And The Mummy 3 is the perfect example of this. I want it to be fun and magical, but magical and fun isn’t a realistic expectation.

Check out the new photos after the jump.

First Look: The Mummy 3

The Mummy 3

Hack action director Rob Cohen has posted the first photo of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor on his production blog.

I don’t understand why anyone is still interested in this series? Rachel Weisz dropped out, Jet Li is the new Mummy, the story sounds really, really lame, and oh yeah, the guy who did Stealth is directing.

The Mummy 3: Curse Of The Dragon

Universal has announced the title for the third film in The Mummy series. The Mummy 3: Curse Of The Dragon will hit theaters on July 11th 2008. Previously Reported: Rob Cohen (xXx) is directing, and Brendan Fraser returns as Rick O’Connell. Rachel Weisz has decided to sit this one out. The film will take place in ancient China and will move forward to a post-World War II setting. Jet Li is also set to star.

Rachel Weisz dumps The Mummy 3 for… Sin City 2?

Rachel Weisz

Rachel Weisz will not be returning for The Mummy 3. TMZ reports that Weisz has four other projects coming “together imminently.” She also is trying to balance her new family life, as she has a 9 month year old son with The Fountain director Darren Aronofsky. The project will move on without Weisz. Universal will most likely write her character, Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell, out of the third script. Brendon Fraser, Jet Li and xXx director Rob Cohen are still officially attached. [Update: Variety has confirmed this story]
A Mummy movie without the Rachel? Count me out. Four other projects? We know Weisz is currently attached to Dirt Music (expected to start production in August 2007), The Lady from Shanghai (which is in early preproduction), and The Colossus (which begins in October 2007). She is currently filming The Brothers Bloom (which I assume will enter into post production sometime before June). That leaves Weisz’ schedule free from May-August 2007. What is the fourth project? Could it possibly be Sin City 2? The Frank Miller/Robert Rodriguez sequel is currently slated to start production in June. It seems to be a perfect fit. We have our fingers crossed.

It was reported last week that Jet Li had been cast in The Mummy 3. Many people wondered how that could be. Well, now we know (or at least think we know).
