Wu-Tang Clan producer and MC the RZA is in China now shooting his first big studio feature as writer, director and star. RZA wrote The Man With the Iron Fist with Eli Roth, and the two have Lucy Liu, Daniel Wu and Byron Mann in the cast. Also in the latest report is word that Russell Crowe, long rumored to have a role in the film, is in fact part of the cast. Reportedly he’ll be in China for most of February, which suggests that his part isn’t a small one. [Film Business Asia via Twitch]

I’d love to recap the meetings that got Universal to write a check to the RZA to the tune of twenty million bucks so the music producer turned actor turned sapling green director could go to China and make a kung-fu movie. Did he fill the boardroom with mind-altering gas, a la the ’60s Batman TV series, or what?
Regardless, the RZA is now in China shooting The Man With the Iron Fist, and his producer/co-writer/advisor Eli Roth is along for the ride. Read More »
Nope, didn’t see this one coming. At all. We knew that RZA and Eli Roth have somehow convinced Universal to throw down a few million (read: $20m) to produce The Man With the Iron Fist, written by RZA and Roth and directed by the Wu Tang Clan beatmaster.
And now, after several years of development, the film seems to have a world-class fightin’ actor set for a role of some sort, as RZA says he’s landed Russell Crowe to be part of the cast. Read More »
In a new interview with The Onion in which he discusses everything from Dawn of the Dead to sperm cells, the RZA let it be known that a biopic on Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the late id of the Wu-Tang Clan, is in early discussion stages. The highlight of Funny People also updated on his hands-on role on The Last Dragon remake and his directorial debut, the kung-fu flick The Man With the Iron Fist, under the tutelage of his pal Eli Roth. Supremely good stuff…

Last week Hunter found a small mention of martial arts film called The Man with the Iron Fist, which RZA is supposedly developing with Eli Roth. CHUD emailed the Hostel director and was able to get the full scoop:
“He has been studying directing with Tarantino for years, and he’s really ready to get behind the camera,” Roth said adding that RZA is “ready to add his own unique style and vision to the world of film.”
Roth calls RZA’s script amazing, saying that RZA’s dream project will “have everything martial arts fans could want”, promising R-rated action: “yes, there will be blood… This ain’t no PG-13.” And now that he brings it up, what would be the point of a PG-13 martial arts movie anyway?
Buried in this Billboard chat with The RZA is the first announcement of a new project he’s working on with horror poster boy and David Copperfield doppleganger Eli Roth…
“RZA has developed a martial arts film with Hollywood pal Eli Roth called The Man with the Iron Fist, which he says has “the blessing” of his ‘teacher,’ Quentin Tarantino…”
These three guys! Let’s hope video from Tarantino‘s “blessing” surfaces on the DVD. Common sense would dictate that The Man With the Iron Fist is categorically unrelated to Marvel’s kung-fu fighting character of the same name. Roth is a longtime fan of chopsockey; maybe he’ll cast friend Matthew Helms, a 19-year-old martial artist and actor who played the lovely “Pan Cake Dennis” in his Cabin Fever? Here’s the ridic clip.
We reported previously that RZA has completed a collaboration with Hans Zimmer on the score to Babylon A.D. And for the Wu-literate, RZA says that he may finally, finally get around to editing and releasing his Bobby Digital blaxploitation movie, which focuses on the “science lab origins” of his neoghetto alter-ego, a violent playboy who wears a $1 party mask, drives ‘rraris and makes no sense.
Discuss: Do RZA + QT + Roth equal the new Night at the Roxbury? What will Eli Roth-fu look like? I guess the obvious answer is…something like Pan Cake Dennis?
