Think you’ve got no time to read, watch, and think about stuff on a contestant basis? Steven Soderbergh is here to show you up. While doing post-production on the ten-episode first season of The Knick, and shooting and editing Magic Mike XXL, and prepping a second season of The Knick, and working as exec producer on The Girlfriend Experience TV show and Citizenfour, and probably doing quite a few other things, Soderbergh still managed to take in a steady diet of other films, TV shows and books. (He also got to see Gone Girl in March.) We know this because he posted a diary of his year in media for 2014, and you can read the full thing below. Read More »

We’ve given you a look at Steven Soderbergh‘s new show The Knick as often as possible, and now we can share the first episode. Following the show’s premiere on Cinemax, the pilot episode of The Knick has been placed online by the channel, and you can watch it below. Read More »
I love Steven Soderbergh‘s “retirement,” and we haven’t even seen much of it yet. The Knick, the ten-episode Cinemax show directed by Soderbergh, doesn’t premiere until August 8. When it premieres, we’ll see Clive Owen as a surgeon, or what passed for a surgeon in 1900, when the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York was a barrier of sorts between life and death. Cinemax evidently likes the show enough to order a second season; the show’s renewal was announced today. Season two of The Knick will also be a ten-episode affair, and Soderbergh will once again direct the entire span.

There’s a lot of news today about television efforts from Steven Soderbergh. First, there was the cast info for his Amazon pilot Red Oaks, which Soderbergh is producing and David Gordon Green will direct. Now we’ve got a set of character posters for Soderbergh’s Cinemax show The Knick, which premieres later this year. The show stars Clive Owen as Dr. John W. Thackery, a forward-thinking surgeon at the New York Knickerbocker Hospital at the turn of the century.
A set of posters for the show supports the set of trailers we’ve seen so far, and gives a spotlight to many members of the supporting cast, and also to what appears to be an impressive attention to detail on the part of the wardrobe and production design departments. Additionally, Soderbergh has been talking about the show, and says that the bracing experience of making the first season has him eager to to a second. Read More »
We’ve been interested in The Knick for months — it’s Steven Soderbergh, after all, directing all ten episodes of a limited cable series on Cinemax. Even better, it has Clive Owen starring as a pioneering surgeon in New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital at the turn of the century. Oh, and the trailers up until this one have all featured the astounding sounds of saxophonist Colin Stetson. (Whose music is also used heavily in The Rover, FYI.) Now there’s a new trailer for The Knick, and it is the most revealing yet. This one prioritizes dialogue over sound and image, even if most of that dialogue is voice-over from Owen. Watch below. Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Cinemax is going slow with the release of footage from Steven Soderbergh‘s TV show The Knick, but that’s OK. The series tells of the early days of modern surgical medicine, focusing on one doctor (played by Clive Owen) at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital. The prior teases were basically still images with ominous music from saxophonist extraordinaire Colin Stetson. This one is still short at 30 seconds, but it at last gives us some dialogue and moving images. They’re still fairly ominous, and weirdly appealing. Check out the latest The Knick teaser below. In a new set of three The Knick teasers, we see more flashes of Steven Soderbergh‘s upcoming Cinemax show. All are pretty short, just like the first, but they feature that same Colin Stetson baritone sax honk, and super-ominous shots of star Clive Owen, who plays a turn of the century surgeon in New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital.
Check out the three below, and link back here for the first. Read More »
Steven Soderbergh may have retired from making feature films, but he’s not done with telling stories. His next project is The Knick, a limited series premiering on Cinemax this summer. Clive Owen stars as a doctor working out of New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital around the turn of the century, when most of the conveniences and safety practices of modern medicine we not yet even theories. Maybe that’s why this looks more like it could be a companion series for Hannibal than for, say, House or ER. A brief teaser is now out, which we point to below. Read More »
Discussions of Steven Soderbergh‘s “retirement” hadn’t gone on very long before the writer/producer/director clarified that he was really moving away from feature films, not necessarily from working in moving images. Television projects have been on the table, and he’s talked about a couple. (Info on The Sot-Weed Factor is here, for example.)
Now there’s a new one: a Cinemax series called The Knick, which Soderbergh’s will produce and direct, with Clive Owen starring. The show is “a period series set in New York in 1900,” with a ten-episode commitment from the channel. Soderbergh will direct all ten episodes, which depict working life in a hospital before the development of modern medical practices. Read More »
