This morning Megan Fox, Ed Helms, and Jessica Alba announced the nominations for the 2013 Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the event, is famous for nominating films and performances simply based on their star factor — if there’s an actor that members of the HFPA want to hang out with, they’re sure to get a nomination.
But the HFPA is great at putting on a show, and so the Golden Globes generate a lot of attention every year. And, as the NY Times points out, with the Globes nominations coming just days before Oscar nomination voting starts, there’s a possibility that nominations here could affect Oscar voting. The Best Picture nomination set includes what is already becoming a standard set of awards favorites, such as Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty, but there are also nominations for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and Django Unchained. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen picked up a few nominations, actually, which was one of the big surprises.
The Golden Globes will air on January 13, 2013, hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. The full nomination list is below. Read More »

We’ve seen a couple brief teasers for The Girl, which describes the making of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. That was when Hitchcock (played here by Toby Jones) molded Tippi Hedren (Sienna Miller) as his latest icy blonde starlet, the latest “Hitchcock blonde” to follow actresses such as Grace Kelly, Eva Marie Saint, Janet Leigh, and Kim Novak. In the years that followed her films with Hitchcock, Hedren described a tense, difficult working relationship, and this film is based in part on her recollection. (Which is to say, don’t expect a particularly favorable portrait of the filmmaker.)
Now we’ve got the full trailer, which describes in brief how Hitch selected Hedren to star in the movie, after which he developed a sexual/romantic obsession with her. We see the director’s wife Alma Reville (Imelda Staunton) and the making of the technically demanding film, and there is a heavy, ominous air throughout. Read More »

Well, it’s a short tease, but here’s our first look at footage from The Girl, which is the first of two films dramatizing the career of Alfred Hitchcock. This one features Toby Jones as Hitch and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren, the model he chose to be the “new Grace Kelly,” beginning with her debut role in The Birds.
As we’ve seen images of Jones in this movie and Anthony Hopkins in Hitchcock, the big question has been how both actors will do with Hitch’s voice and mannerisms. In the case of The Girl, this teaser suggests that Jones is doing a damn fine job. And there’s a great feeling to some of what we see here, to boot. Check out the footage below. Read More »
There are two Alfred Hitchcock films in production right now. One, Hitchcock, features Anthony Hopkins as the droll, rotund Master of Suspense, and focuses on the time Hitch spent making Psycho. We’ve seen some impressive looks at the makeup used to transform Hopkins into his subject, but we have yet to hear and see him in action.
The other film is The Girl, in which Toby Jones plays the director and Sienna Miller appears as Tippi Hedren, the model Hitch chose to make over into an icy blonde starlet to be a new Grace Kelly. We haven’t seen Jones in action, either, but now we’ve got a couple of new images of the two actors in character, with the shot above taken from a scene in which the two seem to be hitting the red carpet for the premiere of Hedren’s first film, The Birds. Toby Jones is going to get a bit of good screen time this weekend as Claudius Templesmith in The Hunger Games. (Well, sadly, only a little bit of good screen time.) But we’ve got a new pic of Jones in one of his next projects: The Girl, a BBC TV movie written by Gwyneth Hughes (Five Days), and directed by Julian Jarrold (Red Riding: 1974).
Jones plays Alfred Hitchcock in an account of the director’s turbulent professional and personal relationship between Hitch and model turned actress Tippi Hedren, who starred in The Birds and Marnie. Below is the first image of Jones as Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Hedren. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
After years of development projects trying to get a movie about Alfred Hitchcock on the screen, two are coming close to fruition. The first is Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, based on Stephen Rebello‘s book of the same title. (Rebello co-scripted with Black Swan writer John McLaughlin.) The film has had Anthony Hopkins set to play Hitch for a while, and just moved from Paramount to Fox Searchlight. And now Helen Mirren will likely play Hitchcock’s wife Alma Reville.
Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) is directing this one, the subject of which should be pretty evident from the title, and THR says that this deal is still in early stages, but the film hopes to shoot in April.
After the break, part of the creation of The Birds will hit HBO and the BBC. Read More »
