Thor Ragnarok Comic-Con Footage and Panel

Members of the /Film staff spent much of the past week in San Diego to cover Comic-Con 2017, the enormous convention that explores every single corner of the geek world (and surely you’ve heard of it and already knew that). We saw footage from Marvel’s upcoming movies, including Avengers: Infinity War. We were able to listen to Steven Spielberg talk about Ready Player One. We explored the world of Blade Runner 2049 in a special VR experience. We watched 7,000 people go totally nuts over the first trailer for Stranger Things season 2.

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. We’ve compiled all of our Comic-Con coverage from the past week into one handy post, organized by category. So please: peruse and enjoy and get your fix.

The Gifted Trailer

While Marvel Studios is preparing to play with their weak-sauce version of mutants in the form of Inhumans over at ABC (which doesn’t look very good at all), it looks like FOX might be the place to go if you’re looking for a better angle on people who just so happen to have superpowers.

The Gifted is a new series written by Matt Nix (Burn Notice), directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men, X-Men: Days of Future Past), both also service as executive producers alongside X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner, X-Men franchise writer Simon Kinberg, as well as Jessica Jones and Daredevil producers Jeff Loeb and Jim Chory. It’s been coined as an X-Men series, but that’s not entirely accurate because, in this series, the X-Men have disappeared for reasons unknown, leaving other mutants to fend for themselves as a government organization hunts them down and prosecutes them for using their powers.

FOX brought The Gifted to San Diego Comic-Con to show off some new footage from the series, and they also debuted a new trailer introducing us to the mutants who will be on the run in this promising new comic book series coming to TV this fall. Read More »

the gifted tv spot

In case you forgot The Gifted was happening, here’s another trailer for the Fox show centering around an “ordinary” family who discover that their two teen kids have mutant abilities. The Strucker family, led by True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer and Joss Whedon regular Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), go on the run, joining a cabal of underground mutants who are hunted by the Sentinels.

The 30-second TV spot is all about the chase, and gives some hints about a certain offspring of a certain magnetic-powered X-Men villain.

FOX

Upfronts week continues with the trailers for the new shows coming to the FOX network in the 2017-2018 season. We’ve already seen the trailer for Seth MacFarlane‘s sci-fi comedy series The Orville, which looks like a solid spoof of the classic Star Trek series, as well as Bryan Singer‘s X-Men series The Gifted. But FOX also unveiled trailers for the comedy series Ghosted starring Adam Scott and Craig Robinson, the procedural drama 9-1-1 from creator Ryan Murphy, the medical drama The Resident with Captain America: Civil War star Emily VanCamp, and an airline comedy called LA to Vegas from executive producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.

The Gifted

As the X-Men movie franchise becomes more bombastic and unwieldy, Bryan Singer turns to the ordinary mutant’s story — well, as ordinary as you can get with a story’s premise being “kids get life-endangering powers” — with a new TV series on Fox. The Gifted indeed looks like a Singer take on Heroes: a buttoned-up family man, misunderstood teens, and an underground cabal of powered people. I wouldn’t be surprised if the main blonde teen girl (Natalie Alyn Lind‘s Lauren Strucker) turned out to be a cheerleader.

The new trailer for The Gifted lays out all these things, but is it actually an intriguing show? That remains to be seen. But Amy Acker is in it, so they have that going for them at least.
