What’s the deal with Spider-Man? It’s the question fans have been asking all summer. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a major disappointment in almost all respects; following its debut grand plans to continue the franchise were completely reshuffled. As it officially stands right now, Drew Goddard‘s Sinister Six film will be out in 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will follow in 2018. There will also be a female-focused film sandwiched somewhere in the middle. That’s all official via Sony.

However the latest rumors suggest some, if not all of that might not be true anymore. Yesterday, the very reputable Drew McWeeny at Hitfix said he’d heard rumblings Sony was talking to Marvel Studios about working out some kind of deal for a crossover. Then today, the equally reputable Devin Faraci at Badass Digest said that’s just one of the possibilities he’s heard Sony is considering with the characters. The others are a “soft reboot” with the Sinister Six, completely shelving the character for a few years, and canceling the planned Venom movie. x-men TV show rumor

There’s no mystery about the fact that superhero films have become one of the dominant forms of the movie business in the US, but the success of Marvel’s universe-building approach is still resounding as other studios race to catch up. Two rumors today are directly concerned with the ways in which other companies are trying to get a piece of Marvel’s success. One says that Fox is developing an X-Men TV series, while another report claims that Sony and Marvel are knocking together a way in which Spider-Man could end up in a Marvel film. Read More »

Felicity Jones Amazing Spider-Man 2

Sony’s complete revamp of its Spider-Man franchise continues. First, the company moved The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back several years. Now, after Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six opens in 2016, Sony is planning to release a spin-off film starring one of Spider-Man’s female counterparts in 2017. There’s no word on which character it’ll be, though Spider-Woman and Black Cat are obvious options. Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld, Pushing Daisies) has been hired to write. Universal Monsters Spider-man

Over the past week, a great deal of talk has centered on two men: Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Formerly partners, the two split amicably a few months back to work on different projects. Before the split, however, the team behind Star Trek and Transformers were both attached to the Amazing Spider-Man and Universal Monsters franchises. Then Orci moved onto Star Trek 3, said he was off Spider-Man, and Kurtzman gained Chris Morgan on his quest to expand the story of the Universal Monsters. Basically, there are a lot of moving parts to both sets of films, and we’ve been wondering how was it all going to work. Is Amazing Spider-Man 3 dead? What about Sinister Six and Venom? Which would come first? And what’s up with those Universal Monsters projects like The Mummy?

Lucky for us, Kurtzman and Orci also work on TV and that means they’re at the TCA Press Tour in Los Angeles this week. There, Kurtzman did his best to clear up a bit of what’s going on with both franchises, without revealing too much of course. Read More »

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Teaser header

This past weekend, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 crossed $200 million in domestic gross. Add in another $500 million across the world, and $700 million seems like a huge success. But fan reactions to the sequel were tepid and it certainly feels like excitement is waining. That’s not good for Sony Pictures, who famously recruited an army of talented writers and directors to shepherd the character in an every expanding, connected world. Two more Amazing Spider-Man films were tentatively scheduled, along with Venom and Sinister Six films. It was an ambitious plan that was definitely less certain after the slightly disappointing reactions to part 2.

Now the plans for The Amazing Spider-Man are even more in flux. Roberto Orci, who was scheduled to co-write The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Venom, revealed he’s left the franchise and isn’t quite sure what’s happening moving ahead. Read his quote about the future of The Amazing Spider Man franchise and more below. Read More »
