Shailene Woodley Mary Jane

A solid performance at the box office last weekend ensured that Divergent would be getting a sequel. But even as Shailene Woodley prepares to move ahead with one big-budget blockbuster franchise, she’s still uncertain about her fate with another.

In a new interview, Woodley casts doubt on whether she’ll play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, as was originally expected when she was cast in the role in 2012. Hit the jump to read her comments.

Divergent

Shailene Woodley was cast as Mary Jane Watson in Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 all the way back in the fall of 2012. By spring 2013, she’d already finished shooting her small role. Then, in the summer of 2013, Webb decided to cut her character from the film altogether.

Officially, there’s been no word on whether Woodley might still play MJ in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Based on her recent comments, though, things aren’t looking so great. But don’t weep for this rising star. According to Woodley herself, she’ll probably just be too wrapped up leading her own action franchise, Divergent. Hit the jump to see what she had to say.

You know that little thing about Sony developing other characters related to Spider-Man? It’s far bigger than you thought. The studio just announced the Venom movie that has been rumored for years, and a Sinister Six film as well. That’s right — unlike some other studio approaches, when it comes to Spider-Man and Sony, the spin-off films are for the bad guys. That’s pretty wild.

To make these movies a creative “brain trust” has been formed, including Marc WebbAlex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard. Together they will collaboratively develop these films as a linked set of projects.

More details are below.

Amazing Spider-Man Poster Header

Amy Pascal, the co-chairman of Sony Pictures, has been discussing some well-publicized financial issues at the studio, and one quote in particular has a lot of people talking:

We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains.

Is she talking about the all-but-confirmed rumor the Sinister Six will eventually appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4? Will Spider-Man need to recruit another hero to help him win that battle? Or is Pascal talking about spin-offs set in the Spider-Man universe, such as the long rumored Venom film? We discuss below.

UPDATE:  Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Michael Lynton added more fuel to the fire with this gem of a quote:

We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man. There are a number of scripts in the works.

New Electro Art Revealed From ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Max Dillon and Spider-Man

Although Electro (Jamie Foxx) plays a major role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for obvious reasons, we still don’t know nearly as much about him as we do Spidey. So we’re intrigued by a new snapshot from the editing bay, which just so happens to reveal a new bit of Electro concept art.

Meanwhile, we know even less about Rhino (Paul Giamatti), but maybe that’s okay. The actor confirms that he’s set for at least one more movie, so we’ll presumably have plenty of time to get acquainted. See the picture and check out Giamatti’s quotes after the jump.

Olsen Giamatti

Two big superhero assumptions were confirmed by actors today. First up, Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson, confirmed Elizabeth Olsen is joining him in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Second, Paul Giamatti, who makes a brief appearance as the Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, said he’s expected to come back for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 (which just got a trio of writers) but probably not The Amazing Spider-Man 4.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Max Dillon and Spider-Man

Sony must be happy with how The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is turning out because they’re bringing back the credited writing team for the third film. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner will write The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which already has a release date of June 10, 2016. Andrew Garfield will return for sure, and the studio apparently wants director Marc Webb to come back too. There’s no word on the villains, but with so many appearing in next summer’s sequel, odds are we’ll see one or two of them back. (Paul Giamatti as Rhino? Dane DeHaan or Chris Cooper as Green Goblin?) There’s also been talk these Spider-Man films are leading to the formation of the Sinister Six. Read More »

With a couple villains appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and plans set to Sony for third and fourth films in Marc Webb‘s take on the character, there has been a lot of speculation about whether or not we’ll see some emulation of The Avengers in one of the latter movies. Specifically, will there be a team?

Clearly there aren’t extra heroes to form a team around Spidey, but what about a bunch of bad guys? Jamie Foxx, who plays Electro in the first sequel, has confirmed that Sony is at least talking about the idea. Read More »
