The idea of a live-action remake of one of the movies by animation master Hayao Miyazaki might not be very appealing no matter who wants to make it, even if the project is based on one of the director’s projects that is best positioned for live-action.
But what about the idea of Miyazaki himself contributing to a live-action companion to one of his films?
Both of these ideas are now realities, with Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) confirmed to direct a live-action version of the coming-of-age story Kiki’s Delivery Service, in which a young witch develops her skills and sense of self-worth after moving to a new town. Miyazaki, meanwhile, contributed a kaiju design for a live-action short that essentially acts as prequel to his early film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Read More »

According to this report, the The Grudge director has signed on to direct a big-budget live-action remake of Kiki’s Delivery Service, Miyazaki’s anime fantasy classic from 1989. Statistically speaking, flying is actually one of the safest ways to travel — you’re much, much more likely to die in a car accident, for example — but you wouldn’t know it from the number of movies that involve horrible things happening aboard an airplane. The latest of these is 7500, a paranormal thriller from The Grudge helmer Takashi Shimizu. Ryan Kwanten, Amy Smart, Jerry Ferrara, Leslie Bibb, and Jamie Chung star as passengers and crew en route from Los Angeles to Tokyo when they begin to notice odd occurrences within the cabin. Steve Carell‘s been doing quite well for himself in his post-Office career. He’s already got several films lined up for the next couple of years, including Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher and the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone. Now the latest addition to his slate is Conviction, a heist film which he’ll produce and star in. Jonathan Herman‘s Black List script centers around a convicted bank robber who’s forced by the FBI to entrap his former protege.
Which sounds good, except that while Herman’s original screenplay had a tone similar to Heat, it’s now being reworked as an action comedy in the vein of 48 Hours or Ocean’s Eleven. That seems like a pretty major shift, though without having read the script I can’t say for certain whether it’s a terrible idea. The project has yet to confirm a writer to draft a new version of the script. [Deadline]

Lately, a day doesn’t go by without news or rumor of new remakes. We’ve already heard about Flatliners today, and here are two more that fall slightly more in the rumor category.
First up, Ghost House Pictures (Sam Raimi’s company) and Mandate are reportedly planning a new re-do of The Grudge. That’s a horror series that has a slightly complicated history, as it began with two DTV Japanese films, which spawned two theatrical Japanese films and then an American remake, all directed by Takashi Shimizu. Two sequels, one theatrical and one DTV were made to follow the US film. And now there might be a new film that remakes one of the Japanese films or otherwise reboots the series. The Japanese equivalent of Disney’s The Haunted Mansion movie is to be Takashi Shimizu‘s The Shock Labyrinth, a 3D horror movie based upon a popular theme park ride. Here’s the official synopsis:
One rainy night a young girl named Yuki goes missing under mysterious circumstances. Following a 10-year absence, she suddenly returns. Her friends Ken, Hajime, Rin, as well as her sister Miyu are confused, but happy to finally see her again. Later that night, Yuki suddenly faints and they try to bring her to the hospital. When they arrive, they find the hospital building itself is actually a strange, mystical labyrinth.
