Rent It

SURROGATES
It’s bad, no question. But bad doesn’t necessarily mean unwatchable. At a scant 88 minutes, Surrogates doesn’t linger on a single idea long enough to be boring. Swap out “boring” with “interesting”, and the same point stands. There was undeniably potential here for a vastly better film, one which more creatively explores this world and more thoughtfully examines the many questions that Surrogates only touches on before rushing to hit the next derivative action movie beat. If you’re willing to accept that the movie isn’t going to do that, it should suffice as cheesily enjoyable formula trash. Hopefully you liked I, Robot, because it’s pretty much the same movie.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD – A commentary with director Jonathan Mostow. Blu-ray – Includes everything on the DVD, as well as 2 featurettes (“A More Perfect You: The Science of Surrogates”, “Breaking the Frame: A Graphic Novel Comes to Life”), and 4 deleted scenes.

New Surrogates Footage Hides In A Music Video

bruce-willis-surrogates-movie

Remember the days when the best way to see early footage of a movie you might want to see was in the music video for a soundtrack single? I think my memories of Shocker (come on, it was Wes Craven before he was really terrible) are more from the Megadeth video than the actual movie. Now tidbits of new footage from Surrogates, directed by Jonathan Mostow and starring Bruce Willis, is in a Breaking Benjamin video on MySpace. In addition, check out a featurette on the film that we didn’t run when it appeared recently, after the break. Read More »

Surrogates Movie Trailer

Surrogates

Touchstone Pictures has released the official trailer for the sci-fi comic book adaptation of Surrogates. The movie tells the story of FBI agents (Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell) who are investigating the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves.

It looks more i Robot than Blade Runner, which is disappointing as the original comic book has been described as Blade Runner in tone. But what more can you expect from the guy who brought us Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Surrogates Extended Preview

surrogates

Disney has also premiered an extended preview of Jonathan Mostow‘s sci-fi comic book adaptation Surrogates. I haven’t been impressed with any of the footage I’ve seen so far, and some people who have read the graphic novel have complained the the film looks too glossy, totally negating the grittiness, Blade Runner-like style of the comic. You can actually hear our friends at the Totally Rad Show praise the hell out of the original graphic novel over here (at timecode 43:20).

Bruce Willis stars as an FBI Agent who is sent to investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves—fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles—enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. The murder spawns a quest for answers: in a world of masks, who’s real and who can you trust?

Check out the footage after the jump, remember to hit the HQ button to see the footage in high quality, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

New York Comic Con: Surrogates Trailer

Shortly after the Up panel at the New York Comic Con today, we received a look at the trailer for Jonathon Mostow’s upcoming live action adaptation of The Surrogates starring Bruce Willis. The film tells the tale of a future where people can transplant their minds into robotic bodies with ease and experience the world without any consequences. That, of course, leaves the door open for all sorts of risky behavior. Willis plays an FBI agent tracking down a criminal who is bent on forcing humanity to live their own experiences again, instead of relying on these robotic surrogates. Read More »

Surrogates Teaser Poster, Viral Website Launched

This weekend at the New York Comic Con, Disney will be unveiling the first footage of Jonathan Mostow‘s sci-fi comic book adaptation Surrogates.

IO9 showed up eatly at the convention hall and was able to snap this photo of this teaser banner/poster promoting a viral site for the film – chooseyoursurrogate.com. I have cleaned up the image. Head on over to the website as it’s completely functional and gives you a look at the company that provides the avatars – Virtual Self Industries.

Surrogates hits theaters on September 25th 2009.

First Look: Bruce Willis in Surrogates

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first official photo for U571/Terminator 3 helmer Jonathan Mostow‘s big screen adaptation the Robert Vanditti graphic novel Surrogates (the graphic novel is available on Amazon for around $14). The sci-fi thriller has an interesting concept, but I found myself unimpressed by an early sizzle reel that was shown at the Walt Disney Showcase in September. Click on the photo above to enlarge.

The official plot synopsis follows: FBI agents (Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell ) investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves—fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles—enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. The murder spawns a quest for answers: in a world of masks, who’s real and who can you trust?

The film also stars Rosamund Pike, James Francis Ginty, Boris Kodjoe and VingRhames. Surrogates hits theaters on September 25th 2009.
