From the moment I heard about Rampart the movie placed high on my ‘must-see’ list. The Messenger director Oren Moverman reunites with Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster to tell a story about the LAPD’s disgraced Rampart division, with a script originally written by LA crime master James Ellroy. Ice Cube is a good cop and Ned Beatty is in the movie, as are Sigourney Weaver and Steve Buscemi.
The movie has hit some festivals and I’m already hearing so much about how good Harrelson is in the film that I’ve just had to shut down all of the chatter until I get a chance to see the film. Rampart is scheduled for a limited Oscar-qualifying run in New York and LA starting next week, but most of us won’t get a chance to see it until January 2012.
There is a trailer right now, however, so you can get a taste of Harrelson’s performance as “the most corrupt cop you’ve ever seen on screen.” Watch it below. Read More »

Being a big fan of William S. Burroughs, especially of his early novels before rampant experimentation took over, I thought one of the best news stories of 2010 was the fact that The Messenger and Rampart writer/director Oren Moverman had scripted an adaptation of Burroughs’ early novel Queer and that Steve Buscemi would produce and direct.
Readings of that script have taken place here and there, but we’ve heard almost nothing about Queer since Moverman started working in earnest on Rampart. With that film finished, earning serious early praise and being set for an Oscar qualifying run late this year and full release in early 2012, news on Queer is starting to surface once more.
In short, the Moverman script is still in use, and Buscemi is still directing. Even better, a recent post-Rampart screening Q&A with Moverman revealed that Guy Pearce, Ben Foster and Kelly MacDonald are all set for roles in the movie. Read More »
Louis Leterrier‘s magician heist movie Now You See Me keeps getting better. The movie features a story about a group of illusionists who rob banks during their performances, and then give at least some of the proceeds out to the audience, even as the FBI is hot on their tail.
The cast already includes Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher, Melanie Laurent, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco, and now Michael Caine has signed on to play Arthur Tressler, the sponsor of the illusionists. The film will be released on January 18, 2013, and unless we see a trailer that looks simply horrible, Now You See Me will be high on our list of anticipated popcorn movies until that date arrives. Last week, we reported on an as-yet-untitled documentary about South Park that would be airing on Comedy Central October 2, days ahead of the show’s October 5 return. We now have a bit more detail on what, exactly, the special will be about. According to Playbill (via Collider), the documentary will be:
an all-access pass to the behind-the-scenes world of creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone at South Park Studios in Los Angeles through this special documentary, providing an exclusive, insiders look into the making of a ‘South Park’ episode.
The documentary is apparently part of a year-long celebration of the series to mark its 15th anniversary. Other components of the celebration include the “South Park Fan Experience” at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, a traveling exhibit curated by artist Ron English, and limited-edition South Park-branded merchandise.

Pixar’s Monsters Inc prequel Monsters University tells the story of how Mike Wazowski and Sulley became friends during their college years at scare school. This weekend at D23 Expo, we learned a lot more about the project. Bowling shirts and bathrobes packed the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City Tuesday night for a cast reunion and screening of The Big Lebowski, in honor of the film’s limited edition Blu-ray release. On hand to discuss the beloved cult classic were musical archivist T-Bone Burnett and stars Jeff Bridges, John Turturro, Julianne Moore, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, each of whom walked on stage to thunderous applause and much yelling of quotes from the film.
Organized by Universal Studios Home Entertainment in conjunction with Lebowski Fest, the evening kicked off with a spirited Q&A hosted by Entertainment Weekly writer and Lebowski superfan Clark Collis before moving into a full-length screening of the cult classic. And yours truly was there in the middle of it all, guzzling watered-down White Russians and singing along to “The Man in Me” with the best of them. I’ve always had this fascination with seeing current rich and famous figures in their humble beginnings, and the success of tabloid columns and webpages devoted to that very topic suggest I’m not the only one. When some A-list faces are as familiar to us as those of our actual loved ones, seeing long-ago photos or videos of them is amusing in the same way that seeing pictures of your friends as little kids is amusing. “Before They Were Famous: 25 Actors in 3 Minutes” collects some especially amusing snippets of today’s biggest stars, including Angelina Jolie, Ryan Gosling, Jack Nicholson, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in some of their earliest acting gigs.
