jk simmons skull island story - whiplash

When we heard Jordan Vogt-RobertsKong: Skull Island was going to be a prequel to the already known King Kong stories, everyone assumed it would be set in the (possibly) distant past. Maybe even a Land of the Lost type thing. It would have to be, right? If Kong hasn’t yet become the King, and we know he gets taken to New York City in the 1930s, you’d assume the story would have to be how he became the ruler of Skull Island. And that would’ve happened a long time ago.

Well, we now have our first clue that Kong: Skull Island isn’t going to be what we thought. At all. In a new interview, one of the film’s co-stars, Oscar frontrunner J.K Simmons, said part of the movie will take place in 1970s Detroit. Could that be the basis for a flashback? Is the whole Kong myth being revamped? Who knows, but we’ll explore the Skull Island movie news below. Read More »

King Kong Portrait by Wei Lin Ke

So far, it’s been nothing but good news on the Skull Island front. After the surprise announcement at Comic-Con, we found out that Jordan Vogt-Roberts will direct. Then we heard Tom Hiddleston will star. And now it’s more good news as Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Gatins has been brought on for a rewrite.

How is a rewrite good news? Well, besides the addition of a talented new team member, the original script by Max Borenstein was strong enough to attract the star, director, and a two year advance release date. Hopefully, things can only get better. Read more about the Skull Island script below. Read More »

Peter Jackson Skull Island Movie

During Legendary’s confusing Skull Island announcement at Comic-Con, a rumor went around that Guillermo del Toro was involved with the project. While that doesn’t really seem to be the case — the latest word is Joe Cornish has been offered the gig — there are at least a couple of guys who wouldn’t mind if it were.

Peter Jackson, who directed 2005’s King Kong, has said that it’d be “fantastic” if del Toro really did take over the franchise, while Andy Serkis, who actually played King Kong, concurs. Hit the jump to read their comments.

King Kong image - Skull Island movie adaptation

Legendary Pictures attempted to surprise the crowd at 2014 Comic Con with a teaser trailer announcing a King Kong-set film project Skull Island. We were given very little information about the project, but Monday we learned more about the writer developing the project and that Legendary has offered the movie to Attack the Block director Joe Cornish. But we still don’t know what the film is about. Is the Skull Island movie adaptation based on a King Kong novel, or an original tale set in the King Kong universe? Or is it possible that Legendary Pictures is working hand in hand with Universal Studios theme parks on making a movie based on a theme park ride that hasn’t even been constructed? I’ll explore both of these questions and more, after the jump.
