Sherlock Holmes 3 Update

While making the publicity rounds for Captain America: Civil War, some surprising news came from Robert Downey Jr. that Sherlock Holmes 3 was still in the works. In fact, there was even a chance that the film could shoot later this year. Shortly thereafter, the sequel landed a writer with James Coyne hired for the gig. Now producer Joel Silver adds more hope that the sequel will happen, and he indicates that this probably won’t be the last one.

Just last week, Robert Downey Jr. offered an update on the next Sherlock Holmes movie, suggesting that a third film in the series could start filming later this year. Considering the apparent lack of momentum on the project, it sounded unlikely. If nothing else, it sounded like Downey trying to keep people interested in a project that was still nowhere close to existing. After all, the last serious piece of news about the film had arrived in 2011, when Iron Man 3 screenwriter Drew Pearce was hired to work on a screenplay.

However, it seems that he may have been more serious about this than expected, because a new writer has officially boarded Sherlock Holmes 3.

Guy Ritchie‘s Sherlock Holmes was one of 2009’s more pleasant surprises, a slick, silly, and surprisingly faithful cinematic re-imagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary “consulting detective.” It’s 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, wasn’t nearly as good, replacing much of the original’s charming bombast with very loud bombast. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the rapport between Robert Downey Jr.‘s insufferable genius investigator and Jude Law‘s put-upon Dr. Watson. I’d be lying again if I said I wouldn’t plunk down the cost of a movie ticket to watch those two bicker and banter one more time.

And while we haven’t heard any solid news about Sherlock Holmes 3 for a few years, Downey Jr. himself says the film is still in development, even hinting that it may shoot later this year.

Robert Downey Jr AMA

Back and forth we go with Iron Man 4. Robert Downey Jr. isn’t doing it, then he’s maybe doing it, then he’ll do it if Mel Gibson directs, then joked he’ll do it if Howard Stern directs. Honestly, there’s so much out there about the film, no one knows for sure what’s happening.

That was, until, Downey Jr. hit the couch on Ellen. When asked about Iron Man 4, Downey told the host that “Yes,” Iron Man 4 is happening.

Below, you can watch that video as well as read a ton of highlights from his recent AMA including teases that he’d love to cameo on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, updates on the development of Sherlock Holmes 3 and a Perry Mason film, possibly playing Doctor Who, the shift in marketing for The Judge, the likelihood of a Weird Science sequel, a few cryptic Avengers: Age of Ultron teases and the controversy of his Tropic Thunder character. Can we assume that Robert Downey Jr. has become a fan of Iron Man 3 screenwriter Drew Pearce? Months before Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows opens, Pearce has been hired to write the provisional  Sherlock Holmes 3 for Warner Bros. (Just as the studio hired A Game of Shadows screenwriters Kieran and Michele Mulroney to get to work on the script before Sherlock Holmes opened.) And since Pearce is writing the third Iron Man film, something Downey is likely quite involved in given his admitted disappointment with the second movie, it isn’t difficult to assume that Downey had a hand in suggesting him to pen Sherlock 3. No plot has been revealed for the potential third film at this time. [Deadline]

After the break, one Paramount exec says Paranormal Activity 4 is almost a certainty, and Frank Miller talks Sin City 2. Read More »
