Warning: this is a half-speculative story that could easily be worked out within  by the end of the week, so it could amount to nothing. But it’s one more piece of the difficult mosaic that has been the development process for Gravity, the space-bound thriller from Alfonso Cuarón. After a long search, the film finally found a lead in Sandra Bullock. And it has boasted, almost since day one, one of the strongest possible supporting actors: Robert Downey, Jr. But now there’s a possibility that scheduling will knock Mr. Downey out the film’s orbit. The cast of Sherlock Holmes 2 is starting to come together, and since the first film began production two years ago, the biggest question mark in franchise lineup has been the actor who will play Professor Moriarty, the arch-nemesis of Sherlock Holmes.

Brad Pitt was once rumored in the role, after reports surfaced claiming that he had shot a cameo to appear in the first film. (We saw only Moriarty’s hand and silouette in that picture, and the actor who voiced him has not been named. Rumors that it was Pitt persist.) Daniel Day-Lewis has also been rumored, but we never figured that would actually happen.

Now there’s a report that a less famous but quite capable actor will play the role: Jared Harris. Read More »

Sherlock Holmes

Briefly: I was surprised to see Jude Law‘s name pop up in the late-breaking cast list for Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo Cabret, which has just begun filming in 3D. Possible spoiler: Now we know that Law plays the father of Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield), which, given that the story is about Hugo being an orphan stranded in a train station, probably means it’s a rather small role. Too bad about that, but there is no shortage of other talent in the film.

After Hugo Cabret, Law has two more films lined up: Sherlock Holmes 2 and the Steven Soderbergh thriller Contagion. Law says that Sherlock 2 could well shoot this fall. “It looks likely that we’re going to shoot the second Sherlock Holmes in October,” he told Empire. The Soderberg film would go after that. For what it’s worth, Law described the Soderberg film in almost exactly the same terms we’ve heard used before (“It’s an ensemble piece about the spread of a H1N1-type disease on an international scale.”) so not a lot of new info there.

Who will play Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes 2? How about two-time Academy Award winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis?
