Much of my personal love for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World doesn’t derive from where you’d think. People point to the funny dialogue, the great music or kick ass action while others might highlight the interesting story or some of the individual performances. That’s all well and good. But when I pop in my Blu-ray, autographed by the whole cast, my personal love for the film comes from the the title sequence. The first 5 minutes or including everything from the 8-Bit Universal Logo through director Edgar Wright‘s credit.
The awesome site The Art of the Title Sequence spoke not only with Wright, but concept designer and head storyboard artist Oscar Wright as well as main title designer Richard Kenworthy in painstaking detail about the creation of the pulse-pounding credits sequence. In the past, if you wanted to make some art based on your favorite filmmaker, you’d have to make the art, print it out, find the filmmaker’s representative’s address, go to the post office, and ship it. Then, you’d hope and pray to get some kind of acknowledgment. Today, though, things are so much easier. Just put some art online and the person it’s about is bound to find it themselves.
That’s the case with artist/musician Lloyd Stas. He created a beautiful set of posters based on the work of Edgar Wright and simply put them online. “I posted them up onto Flickr and woke up the next day to find that Edgar has posted them up on his twitter and his blog,” Stas said in an exclusive email interview. “I hadn’t told him about them and he was one of the first to find them. I was just hoping that he might see the posters, but the fact that he posted them on his blog and said such nice things about them was too awesome and very flattering.” Now, we can show them to you. Looking back, 2010 is not going to be remembered as a particularly good year for movies. In my mind, most of the 150 or so new films I saw from January to December are all muddled together in a big pile of mediocrity. When that happens though, it’s so much easier to pick out the truly great ones. To that end, picking my favorite movies of 2010 was easier than previous years. What was harder, though, was weeding through an insane amount of movies that didn’t end up getting released during 2010. Why recommend them if you can’t see them?

The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles is one of those movie theaters that film fans must visit at some point in their life. Maybe it’s not the prettiest theater in the world, but the tickets are cheap, the popcorn is cheap, and it regularly has some of the best, if not the best, repertory screenings imaginable, mostly in double features. Now, for their 2011 season, they’ve decided to kick it off the Wright way. The Edgar Wright way.
The New Bev will play host to over two weeks of films programmed by director Edgar Wright. They did it three years ago and now, the director of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (which will screen as one marathon) is back for The Wright Stuff II. Don’t expect to see Winter’s Bone, King’s Speech, Toy Story 3, Never Let Me Go, and How to Train Your Dragon nominated for the WGA Awards. The Writers Guild of America have revealed the list of eligible films, and none of the previously mentioned highly acclaimed movies/screenplays are on the ballot. Before you get up in arms, you must realize that the guild’s rules restrict nominations to productions aren’t produced by WGA members or under WGA guidelines.

I hope everyone here had a happy holiday break! I had the chance to finally sit back, relax aimlessly for a few days, and take in some Netflix Watch Instantly films that I wouldn’t get to during the normal course of events. One such film was Sweetgrass, which guest Matt Singer discussed on a previous episode of the /Filmcast. As I watched, I was struck with the film’s breathtaking beauty, and I realized that there’ve been some great-looking films this past year.
Here are what I consider to be the 10 most beautiful films of 2010. There’s no grand unifying theory to this list, other than that these are movies I personally really enjoyed looking at for one reason or another. They are presented in no particular order.
