Optimum Releasing have released the movie trailer for 28 Weeks Later and The American screenwriter Rowan Joffe‘s directorial debut, an adaptation of Graham Greene‘s 1938 novel Brighton Rock. The book was first adapted to the screen in 1947 in a movie starring Richard Attenborough. This time around Joffe has updated the setting to the 1960’s. The story follows “the headlong fall of Pinkie, a razor-wielding disadvantaged teenager with a religious death wish.” The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September to mixed response. Sam Riley (Control) stars as Pinkie, and the film co-stars Helen Mirren (The Queen), John Hurt, Andy Serkis, and Andrea Riseborough.

Since he emerged as a possible new leading man in Anton Corbijn’s 2007 Ian Curtis biopic Control, Sam Riley has taken his time fulfilling that early promise. He’s finally about to hit screens with a couple of new roles in Brighton Rock and 13, and he’s now shooting the decades-in-development adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road.
As a follow-up to those three films, Riley now has what could be his most intriguing post-Control project. He’s set up to appear as playwright and Shakespeare contemporary Christopher Marlowe in A Dead Man in Deptford, which will toy with the revisionist notion that Marlowe was also a spy and victim of political assassination. I’m not quite sure how I feel about the upcoming film version of Jack Kerouac‘s On the Road, which will be directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries). It’s breakout time for Greta Gerwig. She had a slightly (very slightly) more mainstream part than usual in Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg and a great little role in The House of the Devil (pictured above). Now there’s a report that she is in talks to take Liza Minelli’s old role in the brewing remake of Arthur. Russell Brand is already set up with Dudley Moore role, as a drunk, self-indulgent playboy who falls for a charming blue-collar shoplifter (that would be Gerwig), while Helen Mirren is reportedly taking the droll role butler played by John Gielgud.
On one hand, this remake seems utterly absurd and pointless. On the other, Gerwig is a fantastic choice for the part. She’s the first aspect of this equation that has made me thing, “yeah, ok, I might see that.” [Deadline]

An early trailer for the dark dystopian fantasy film Franklyn has shown up online. The first feature film by writer/director Gerald McMorrow, Franklyn is a “split narrative set simultaneously in contemporary London and in a future metropolis ruled by religious fervor.” Sounds pretty crazy right? Well it gets even weirder. “It’s the story of four lost souls, divided by two parallel worlds, on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.”
Ryan Phillippe plays a masked vigilante detective named Preest, who is searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Bernhard Hill plays Esser, a broken man who is searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London’s homeless. Sam Riley plays a heartbroken guy named Milo, who is desperately trying to find a way back to “the purity of first love.” And Eva Green plays an art student named Emilia whose suicidal artwork is “becoming increasingly more complex and deadly.”
The futuristic London city sounds like it almost ripped from the pages of The Golden Compass. But I must admit, the film has caught my interest even though the trailer is very poorly taped together. I’m pretty sure this is a temp trailer as it features the score from Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain. The concept of a trailer using the score from Requiem or The Fountain has almost a cliché. Why does every trailer editor choose to cut to Clint Mansell? I mean, I love his music too, but you would think it would get old at some point.
