This Thanksgiving brings a slew of intriguing releases, from family-friendly fare like The Muppets and Hugo to possible Oscar contenders like The Artist and My Week with Marilyn, and now we have at least one reason to look forward to next year’s holiday as well.
The Weinstein Co. have just decided on a November 21, 2012 release for David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook, which suggests the company sees the film as a potential player in next year’s awards season — no surprise, considering Russell’s last film The Fighter was nominated for seven Oscars in 2010 including Best Picture and Best Director. The date also gives the movie plenty of time to make the festival rounds and garner some good buzz before hitting theaters.
Based on a novel by Matthew Quick, the film follows a former high school teacher (Bradley Cooper) who moves back home after spending years in a mental institution. He initially sets out to try and win back his ex-wife, but soon finds himself developing a relationship with an eccentric young widow (Jennifer Lawrence) who lives in his neighborhood. A new poster and trailer have dropped for New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall‘s follow-up to his commercial hit Valentine’s Day. The film appears to be essentially just Valentine’s Day with warmer clothing and some casting changes. Once again, Marshall brings together lots of big-name celebs for a collection of interlinked love stories that revolve around the holiday name-checked in the title.
This time around, the stars are Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Hector Elizondo, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Til Schweiger, Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vergara, Alyssa Milano, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ice Cube, Seth Meyers, John Stamos, Jon Bon Jovi, John Lithgow, Ludacris, and Ryan Seacrest, who all converge in or around Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Good things keep coming for the stars of Animal Kingdom, as Jacki Weaver lands a role in David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook. Weaver will play Bradley Cooper‘s mother in the film, based on Matthew Quick‘s novel about a former high school teacher (Cooper) who’s just been released from a four-year stint at a mental institution into the care of his mother. Upon his release, the protagonist initially tries to win back his ex-wife but eventually falls into a romance with an eccentric young widow (Jennifer Lawrence).
Also signed on for the project is Robert De Niro in an unnamed part. Chris Tucker was said to be in talks for the part of Cooper’s pal from the institution, but the latest reports don’t mention him, so I’m guessing he’s out. The Silver Linings Playbook is set to begin shooting this fall. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Way back in late 2010, we reported on the potential casting of Bradley Cooper in the lead role for David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook. At some point, however, Mark Wahlberg emerged as the star of the film, and Cooper was no longer associated with the project. Now, it’s looking like we’re back to square one, with Wahlberg out and Cooper back in. Wahlberg has dropped out of the film due to a scheduling conflict with a different project (possibly Broken City with Allen Huges), and Cooper is currently in talks to replace him.
Also in talks for the movie is Robert De Niro, who met with Russell earlier this summer regarding an unnamed part. Jennifer Lawrence is still set to co-star as the main character’s love interest. Based on a novel by Matthew Quick, the film follows a former high school teacher (that’d be Coopers part) who’s just been released from a four-year stint at a mental institution into the care of his mother. The first trailer has dropped for New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall‘s not-quite-sequel to his 2010 hit Valentine’s Day. If you’ve ever seen Valentine’s Day, you probably know what to expect: big-name celebrities, a bunch of disparate storylines, and people crowing about how goddamn magical the holiday in question is.
This time around, many mini-plotlines converge in New York City on the titular holiday, and the cast consists of Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Hector Elizondo, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Til Schweiger, Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vergara, Alyssa Milano, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Abigail Breslin, Ice Cube, Seth Meyers, John Stamos, Jon Bon Jovi, John Lithgow, Ludacris, and Ryan Seacrest. Topher Grace has joined the cast of Gently Down the Stream, which already has some prominent actors on board: Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl and Amanda Seyfried. Justin Zackham wrote and will direct the story of a slightly awkward family romance. Specifically, De Niro and Keaton are a couple and father to Topher Grace’s character. But he’s also got an adopted brother, and that guy has a sister, and Topher Grace falls for her. Oops. [Deadline]

In casting news tonight, we’ve learned that Harvey Keitel is joining those crazy Fockers. He’s signed on for Little Fockers, the sequel to Meet the Fockers, and the Focker-pun free title Meet the Parents. He’s joining returning cast members Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, Teri Polo, and Owen Wilson. Keitel will be playing the role of a contractor employed by Stiller’s character. The film will be directed by Paul Weitz (American Pie, About A Boy), who’s surely looking to move on after Cirque du Freak bombed.
I liked the first film well enough, but I’m really wondering how much longer this franchise is going to live on. Will we see the baby Fockers in question growing up while having to deal with their unfortunate last name? Perhaps a Future Fockers down the line? The possibilities are focking endless!
