When news broke that Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell would soon be beating each other’s heads in on a football field, comedy fans hopefully took notice. The original story was that The Other Guys co-stars would star in a Warner Bros. movie called Turkey Bowl about rival families who play a very heated game of neighborhood tackle football. Little else was revealed except that Robert Carlock and Scott Silveri would write the screenplay and that producers Ferrell and partner Adam McKay wanted it to be a huge, comedy ensemble. Curiously, the film also shared a title and plot points with a festival darling that had just been picked up.
We now know so much more. McKay, talking to Entertainment Weekly, says the title has tentatively changed to Three Mississippi (to avoid confusion with other Turkey Bowl) and will also feature Alec Baldwin, Rob Riggle and possibly Jeremy Renner. You may think you’ve never heard of Matt Walsh, but odds are, you’ve seen his work before. Walsh is probably best known as one of the founders of the Upright Citizens Brigade, and he’s also appeared in supporting roles in tons of films (Elf, Bad Santa, Role Models, Mystery Team, Cyrus, every comedy Todd Phillips has ever done) and television shows (Childrens Hospital, Outsourced, Party Down, Human Giant, Reno 911!, The Daily Show). In short, while he’s not quite as famous as some of his colleagues, it’s safe to say he has a pretty solid comedy resume. Now Walsh is taking on a slightly different kind of role: director. The latest addition to the cast roster of The Three Stooges is Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara, who is now in talks to play a femme fatale. (THR describes her as “a devious woman who pretends to be the wife of a dying man and tells the Stooges she’ll pay them a handsome sum if they kill the man in his sleep.”) The part factors into the middle section of the film; the Farrelly Brothers are presenting the movie structured as three 30-minute shorts. As for the rest of the cast, Will Sasso is Curly, Sean Hayes is Larry, and no Moe has been picked. (Or none has been announced, anyway.) [Original report: Variety]

Looking only at live-action films such as The Cat in the Hat, you’d think the books of Dr. Seuss are better left to the page. But Chuck Jones has proved that animation, guided by a careful hand, is a fine way to bring the author’s stories to the screen. Horton Hears a Who, directed by Jimmy Hayward and produced by Chris Meledandri, was a less than spectacular example of Theodor Geisel’s work cranked through a bank of servers to create an animated feature.
Mr. Meledrandri’s family division at Universal, Illusion Entertainment, is now making The Lorax, which we’ve now learned features Danny DeVito as the voice of the title character. Read More »
The ensemble cast for The Other Guys, the latest collaboration between funnymen pals Will Ferrell and writer/director Adam McKay, is of a higher-profile than on their previous flicks, sans Anchorman. Today brings news that Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “Tooth Fairy” Johnson will play stud “super cops” to the unfulfilled desk pigs played by Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Rob Riggle, and Craig Robinson. In addition, Brit comedy and Alan Patridge mastermind, Steve Coogan, will play the villain, automatically kicking the craziness up a notch. Filming on The Other Guys, the ’10 cop comedy from writer/director Adam McKay (Step Brothers, Anchorman) rolls this month in New York, and today sees three new additions to the cast. Formerly entitled The B Team, I’m curious to see what McKay has up his twisted sleeve, because the buddy-cop formula isn’t just asthmatic, it’s cliche to the point of surreality, and he’ll also have Hot Fuzz to contend with.
