Ride Along

Universal was so confident in the buddy cop comedy Ride Along that it put the sequel in development way back in April – nine months before the first film was even scheduled to premiere. Now that the movie has actually gone on to set a January opening record, it looks like their faith is paying off.

The studio has set Ride Along director Tim Story to return for the sequel, and is working on deals with stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart to reprise their roles. Also coming back are producers Will Packer and Matt Alvarez, and writers Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi. More details on the next installment after the jump.

Ride Along

Ice Cube is so good at playing a no-nonsense cop, he’ll get to do it in two separate and unrelated movies next year. We got a trailer for one of those, 22 Jump Street, earlier this week. Now the other one, Ride Along, has released a new trailer as well.

The comedy stars Kevin Hart as an aspiring cop who wants to propose to his girlfriend (Tika Sumpter). But before he can do that, he has to get the blessing of her older brother (Ice Cube). Eager to scare him off, Cube invites Hart on a ride-along; equally eager to impress, Hart readily accepts. Then the night spirals crazily, and hopefully hilariously, out of control. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Ride Along

After playing one of the most memorable supporting characters in 21 Jump Street, Ice Cube is getting a buddy-cop comedy of his own.

That header image probably tells you everything you need to know about the dynamic at the center of Ride Along, but in case you need more detail: The comedy stars Kevin Hart as Ben, an aspiring cop who wants to ask his girlfriend (Tika Sumpter) to marry him — much to the irritation of her big brother James, a tough Atlanta PD officer. In an effort to scare him off, James invites Ben to prove himself on the worst ride-along ever. Watch the trailer after the jump.

The Heat

Studios pretty much always hope a movie will do well enough to earn a sequel, but when a studio begins working on a follow-up before the first film even opens it’s a real vote of confidence. And if recent developments at Fox and Universal pan out, we could be seeing two buddy cop comedy franchises take flight in the near future.

The former has already struck a deal with Katie Dippold to script a sequel to the Melissa McCarthy / Sandra Bullock comedy The Heat, which she also wrote. Over at Universal, meanwhile, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi are wanted back to pen the Ride Along sequel. They worked on the original, which stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart and opens next January. Hit the jump to keep reading.
