Earlier this week we told you how Zootopia was going to be a different movie, originally following Jason Bateman’s character Nick Wilde and featuring an more-in-your-face message. Well you might be surprised that the original idea for Zootopia was a James Bond parody featuring talking animals. How the that idea evolve into whats now on the screen? Read my exclusive interview with directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore and discover how a story like this evolves within the Disney Animation Studios creative process.

When Disney Animation Studios began work on Zootopia, they didn’t know the film would pack the sophisticated social political message thats being praised by critics. In fact, they didn’t even know that the Ginnifer Goodwin-voiced bunny character Judy Hopps would be the main character — Jason Bateman‘s fox character Nick Wilde was originally supposed be be the lead. Learn why the lead characters in Disney’s 55th animated feature were swapped very late in the process, find out how the message in Zootopia came from a research trip to Africa and hear the filmmakers explain why it comes from the place of character and story, not politics.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has been on a roll in recent years, with a list of films that includes Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled, Big Hero 6, Frozen and the short films Feast and Paperman. Many people would say that the Burbank-based animation studio has been turning out more consistently great films than their Emmerville brother Pixar. Their latest film Zootopia from directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore (Bolt, Tangled) is set to hit theaters in the US in March 2016, and the first trade reviews have begun to hit online as the film is being released early in international markets (under the alternate title Zootropolis).
Does Disney Animation have another hit on their hands or will this be their Good Dinosaur? Find out as we take a look at the early Zootopia reviews through spoiler-free excerpts, after the jump.

Talking animals are nothing new in the world of Disney animated features, but Zootopia takes them to a whole new level by presenting an entire city built, populated, and run by mammals. There are hamster businessmen, shrew mobsters, and a lion mayor. Our protagonists are a fox con artist (voiced by Jason Bateman) and a rabbit police officer (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin). And they all have one thing in common: they really, really love making animal puns.
A new Zootopia clip addresses the very literal “elephant in the room,” while another offers a peek at “Zoogle,” the animal version of Google. There’s also one more Zootopia trailer that offers a better look at Nick’s (Bateman) scamming ways. Check it all out after the jump. Read More »

This fall will mark three years since Wreck-It Ralph hit the big screen, and we’ve yet to hear any updates on progress towards making a sequel. Last we heard from composer Henry Jackman was that a story was in the works, but that’s all he could say.
As of now, we’re still not sure when the sequel will get off the ground, but it sounds like fans don’t need to be worried that it won’t happen. Wreck-It Ralph voice actor John C. Reilly recently appeared at the Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland, and confirmed that he’s signed on for a sequel to the video game based adventure.

The premise of Disney Animation’s Zootopia isn’t terribly hard to follow. It’s set in a sprawling metropolis built, run, and populated by non-human animals. Much like Pixar took off last year, Disney Animation is taking off this year. After a nice string of hits including the all-time animated champion, Frozen, Disney Animation isn’t releasing a film in 2015 but will be back in 2016. Their next movie is called Zootopia, a film they revealed at the D23 Expo back in 2013 set in a massive animal metropolis. It’ll be released on March 4, 2016, features the voices of Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin and though we’ve seen some concept art (like above) the first official look at the film’s main characters is now online. Check it out below. Read More »
During pre-production on Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, the film’s director Rich Moore had four games in mind for the film: Fix-It Felix Jr., Hero’s Duty, Sugar Rush and Extreme Easy Living 2. The final game, sort of The Sims meets Grand Theft Auto, was deemed superfluous and shelved, possibly for a sequel or possibly forever. With the film now on DVD and Blu-ray, Disney has released a storyboarded deleted scene set inside Extreme Easy Living 2, giving an idea of what it would have been like. Check it out below, along with some quotes from the director about the game and why it was cut. Read More »
