We must soon hit some critical mass when it comes to genre mash-ups and goofy nods to classic ideas. Cowboys & Aliens will be an interesting experiment when it arrives in theaters next summer. The title makes the film sound absurd, but from what I’ve seen (a good amount) it looks as if Jon Favreau and his cast and crew have assembled a film that has the potential to go above and beyond a silly “hey, what if cowboys fought aliens?” pitch. But that’s because a post-Iron Man Jon Favreau was able to get a solid script and a wonderful cast. Looks like the exception, not the rule.

So what of Cowboy Ninja Viking? Disney has just put that film into development by hiring Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to write a script based on the Image Comics graphic novel created by AJ Lieberman and Riley Rossmo. More details on that, as well as what Rhett Reese has to say about Zombieland 2 and Deadpool, after the break. Read More »

You probably know Rhett Reese as the co-screenwriter of Zombieland. Along with his writing partner Paul Werneck, Rhett have since worked on a few drafts of G.I. Joe 2, Marvel’s Deadpool, a Venom Spider-Man spin-ff movie, and a sequel to Zombieland. If that wasn’t enough, Reese has also been hard at work writing his first novel, a black comedy/horror book titled Anxiety.

In the last couple of months, Ryan Reynolds has been attached to a huge series of films as both actor and producer. The effect of all that is two-fold: his management and reps are obviously determined to make him huge, for one. And, more important to some fans, we’ve wondered if all the other work meant that his Deadpool film at Fox was going to fall between the cracks.

Now Reynolds is talking about Deadpool, and making it seem very much alive and well, if still working its way through the development process. Read More »

Robert Rodriguez has been distancing himself from The Weinstein Company, and starting to set up a new studio home at Fox. His last movie for the Weinsteins will likely end up being Spy Kids 4. He didn’t direct Predators for Fox, but he was the prime mover on the project regardless, and the studio offered him the director’s chair for the Planet of the Apes prequel, suggesting that Fox brass is happy with the work he’s done so far. (Or happy to work with a known quantity; regardless, RR turned down the Apes job.)

Now there’s word that Rodriguez has been offered a job directing the Deadpool film, which Fox has been actively developing since X-Men Origins: Wolverine opened last year. Read More »

Zombieland Screenwriters Hired For GI Joe Sequel

GI Joe

Update: IESB is now reporting the Paramount Pictures has hired Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen a sequel to GI Joe: Rise of Cobra. Reese and Wernick recently signed on to pen Deadpool for Fox/Marvel, and might be the perfect scribes to invent some over the top stupid action for a GI Joe sequel. As I said in the Deadpool post, I’m a big fan of Reese and Wernick’s work on Zombieland. I don’t think people give enough credit to the clever and hilarious screenplay when talking about the success of that film.

Original post follows after the jump.

Last month is was rumored that Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were writing the script for the big screen comic book adaptation of Deadpool. As much as I wanted to love Wolverine, I couldn’t get past the horrible dialog, plot, and misuse of iconic Marvel characters. They couldn’t even get Wolverine’s claws right—and it’s not like they haven’t had several other films to perfect such a simple effect. Needless to say, my enthusiasm for the upcoming Deadpool film has been fairly tepid thus far. Now Chud is running an interesting rumor that, if true, could actually make me hopeful for a Deadpool film. Apparently, Fox may be looking to hire the writers of this summer’s Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, for the film. Read More »

Zombieland 2 and Jackass 3D Confirmed

zombieland_sequels

Last month, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer mentioned that not only is Sony interested in a sequel, but if they can “crack” the story for a sequel, it will probably be shot in 3D. A few days later, a list of Paramount’s 2010 slate listed another Jackass sequel, Jackass 3D. Variety has now confirmed that both projects are in development. Who is signed? Who isn’t? When will the films go into production? Find out after the jump.
