We’ll be hearing arguments over which film really deserved the Best Picture Oscar for months, if not years, to come, but if the Razzie results are any indication there’s a firm consensus on which movie was the worst of 2012.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II swept this year’s proceedings, as seven out of their record-tying eleven nominations turned into wins. Keep in mind that that’s eleven nominations out of ten categories — that’s how bad Razzie voters thought this thing was. That’s My Boy and Battleship got a little love (hate?) as well. Yes, you read the headline right. Bill Condon‘s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II was nominated for every single Razzie category. 11 nominations in 10 categories. It’s by far the leader for the 33rd annual “award” show that commemorates the worst films released in the past year. The rest? You can basically imagine. As the race for the year’s most coveted trophies came to a close with this weekend’s Oscars ceremony, another much less prestigious awards competition was just getting started. Nominations have been announced for the 32nd Razzie Awards, handed out to the “worst achievements in film” each year.
Leading the 2012 list is Adam Sandler, whose involvement in Jack and Jill, Bucky Larson, and Just Go With It earned him a record-breaking eleven Razzie nominations. That’s more than twice as many as the previous record holder, Norbit star Eddie Murphy, received in 2007. Other standouts include Nicolas Cage, Ken Jeong, Sarah Palin, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I, and The Hangover Part II. Tomorrow the Oscar nominations will be announced, which means that today is the day for the Golden Raspberry Foundation to release the nominations for the 2010 Razzies. To no one’s surprise, the list pokes a stick at The Bounty Hunter, The Last Airbender, Sex and the City 2, and other less scintillating moments from 2010. Check out the list after the break. As the movie industry evolves, so to do the Razzies. The anti-Oscars, which infamously recognize the worst movies of the year, have announced their short list of eligible films which includes a brand new category: Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3D. The Golden Raspberry Foundation has revealed its nominations for the worst films and performances of 2009. The contenders for the latest batch of Razzies include most of the films you’d expect to see on the list: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen; G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Pink Panther 2 and All About Steve. All bad films, sure, but it seems like the list could be a little more interesting. Where’s The Informers, which is a total disaster? Where’s Amelia, the would-be prestige picture that drones on like the buzz of an airplane propeller?
Really, the only notable thing about this batch of Razzie noms is that Sandra Bullock could be one of those rare individuals to find themselves nominated for both a Razzie and an Oscar in the same week. The Academy’s famously snide sib, The Razzies, announced its nominations for the worst movies, performances and direction of 2007 today. Leading the lepers is the already cultish Lindsay Lohan stripper-twin-Blue Velvet-for-Proactiv-set thriller I Know Who Killed Me with nine noms, including Worst Picture. And that seals it: I’m finally going to consider watching it stoned one day when I’m 70. Lohan actually scored two Worst Actress noms for playing twins. Cute. But there’s still no way it’s worse than The Number 23, which was excluded for Worst Picture. A travesty. Winners of the Little Naked Gold Man will be announced on February 23rd.
