We’re moving into a brave new world of CGI and motion capture. No longer will actors be limited to playing characters that move, and no longer will filmmakers be forced to rely on outdated ‘props’ and ‘set dressing.’ There is a new wave of motion capture artists who are pushing the boundaries of motion capture as an art form.
After the break, you’ll find a brief documentary on these cinematic trailblazers. Read More »

The /Filmcast: After Dark is a recording of what happens right after The /Filmcast is over, when the kids have gone to bed and the guys feel free to speak whatever is on their minds. In other words, it’s the leftover and disorganized ramblings, mindfarts, and brain diarrhea from The /Filmcast, all in one convenient audio file. In this episode, David Chen, Devindra Hardawar, and Adam Quigley chat with Paul Scheer about the craziness behind the set of Piranha 3D, as well as Paul’s exciting other projects. Check out Paul’s amazing interview with Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander.

Here’s the first teaser footage from Dimension’s Piranha 3DD, the sequel to Alexandre Aja’s revival of the Piranha series. If this teaser is to be believed, Feast director John Gulager hasn’t changed the formula at all, so this sequel has some sort of story (featuring David Hasselhoff) partially pushed to the background as another group of partying bikini-clad beach babes gets chewed up by hungry prehistoric fish.
We see a glimpse of returning actors Christopher Lloyd and Ving Rhames, the latter of which comes bearing a Robert Rodriguez touch. That, and the whole tone of this teaser, makes Piranha 3DD look like something that might appeal to anyone who enjoyed the low-brow silliness of the last movie. In other words, this is exactly what you expect it to be. Oh, and it is mildly NSFW, as the title suggests. Read More »
In the 1980s, Kenny Loggins was the king of the movie soundtrack. The soft rocker did the theme songs to Top Gun (Danger Zone), Caddyshack (I’m Alright), Footloose (Footloose) and more over a few short years in addition to being a very successful solo and group artist. To this day, those songs both help and hinder the career of Loggins and in a two new Funny or Die videos, he embraces their legacy.
After the jump, watch Loggins and his new band Blue Sky Riders performing theme songs to The Help, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Real Steel, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, The Hunger Games and two for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. With a little help from Paul Scheer of course. Read More »

Briefly: Now, finally, we can all breathe a tremendous sigh of relief. Just when it looked like Piranha 3DD might be a contractually-obligated sequel with a mostly uninspiring cast, we now know that it will probably be a coffer-filling sequel with a slightly more entertaining cast. Because Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames and Paul Scheer have all agreed to reprise their roles. Paul Scheer was actually supposed to die in the first film, but that scene was cut, so movie magic, in addition to contractual magic, means that he gets to fight fish another day. How does the Ving Rhames character return? Uh…a twin? Android replicant? Rapid cloning, perhaps?
Cameras are in or near the water in North Carolina right now, with a November release date set. The first film had some silly gore that went so far over the top that I couldn’t help but laugh. Hopefully under the direction of John Gulager (Feast) this one will go even further into blood-red waters.
