It’s too bad that Sony, David Fincher and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo have already locked down the ‘feel-bad movie of Christmas’ tagline, because it looks like Jason Reitman‘s fourth film Young Adult might be a contender for that title.
The movie, scripted by Juno writer Diablo Cody, is a dark comedy about an alcoholic youth-lit author (Charlize Theron) who returns to her hometown to chase her now-married high school flame, played by Patrick Wilson. The one-sheet for the movie has just hit, and it looks like something that could be snuck onto a middle-school bookshelf alongside old Judy Blume books. With that portrait of a passed-out Theron, the youth-lit derived poster is in the running for most inspired design of 2011. Check it out in full below. Read More »

Briefly: Rumors had been around for some time, but now we’ve got official confirmation: at some point actor Patrick Wilson (Watchmen, Little Children) joined the cast of Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus. We don’t know his role or how significant a part he’s got in the movie. In fact, while quite a few rumors have hit the internet, and a good many spy pics have floated around, the real meat of the film’s story remains somewhat obscure. (You can read potentially very spoilerish plot details here, though we don’t know to what degree they are accurate.) I don’t want to run most of the set photos that have hit, but suffice to say that they bear a very distinctively Alien influence.
The cast features Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green and Guy Pearce. No footage is online at this point, but I recapped the Comic Con footage presentation here. I think people will be fairly happy with the look of the film when Fox releases an official trailer. Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8, 2012. Patrick Wilson also has a part in Jason Reitman’s upcoming Young Adult, which hits on December 16 of this year. We’ve been hearing about the next Jason Reitman-Diablo Cody collaboration, Young Adult, for over a year now, and with each tidbit of news I’ve become more and more eager to see the film. And now that the release date has finally been announced, I finally know when I’ll actually get to watch it.
The film stars Charlize Theron as a writer who returns to her hometown in order to win back her high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). But don’t be fooled by the romcom-esque premise — Cody herself has described the project as “pretty serious and fucked up.” Hit the jump for details on the project, including the release date.

Paramount Pictures has released the official one-pager for Jason Reitman‘s upcoming film Young Adult starring Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt, and Patrick Wilson. I’ve heard good things coming out of the test screenings in Southern California, including praise for Theron, Oswalt and Diablo Cody‘s screenplay (which has been described as completely different than any of her past work). No release date has been announced, but I would assume that the film will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, as that has been the debut venue for Retiman’s last couple films. The fact that Paramount had uploaded a one-pager also hints that they are probably planning to release the first image from the film soon. Hit the jump to find out more about the film.

Sundance entry The Ledge, in which Terrence Howard plays a detective who is trying to talk Charlie Hunnam out of killing himself, has always seemed like one of those movies. A known but not terribly high-powered cast; a big setup; and a story that seems to uncomfortably weave a discussion about religion into the narrative. A movie about Issues, in other words, disguised none too cleverly as a thriller. (And it isn’t Man on a Ledge; that’s a different film with Sam Worthington.) Now that there is a trailer for the IFC release, it seems even more so. Check it out after the break, but be ready to see Patrick Wilson‘s righteous religious fury stir up some trouble. Read More »
Jason Reitman‘s next film Young Adult stars Charlize Theron as a young adult novelist who returns to her hometown to try to rekindle the relationship with her high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson), who is happily married with kids. Written by Diablo Cody, the film is said to be nothing like the previous Reitman/Cody collaboration Juno. I haven’t seen the movie yet, although I have heard from a couple people who have. The consensus so far is the movie is really solid, well written, and has great performances from Theron and Patton Oswalt, but mainstream audiences might have trouble liking the protagonist who is unsympathetic and… well, almost completely unlikable.
Jason Reitman recently spoke at Wake Forest University’s Reynolda Film Festival in Winston-Salem, NC, and told the audience that Young Adult may be the most unlikable film he’ll ever make. Details after the jump.

Belgium has an international profile in some circles — it is a resource for joke writers and beer connoisseurs — but in the film world it is more notable as a location or reference (In Bruges, The Brothers Bloom) than as the base for a thriving Flemmish-language film industry. But there are the occasional breakout pictures, and the thriller Loft was one. The 2008 film was a local hit, and is now spawning an English-language remake that will likely star Patrick Wilson and James Marsden. Read More »
