Fans of comics, toys, TV, movies and video games have come to consider San Diego Comic-Con almost like Christmas. We wait patiently all year, and then four days in July pack in months worth of awesome. However, while we’ve come expect that level of crazy for the traditional pop culture stuff, the last few years have done the same for the poster world too. That’s in large part because Mondo has chosen to release dozens of exclusive posters at the event as well as provide some incredible opportunities to fans. This year seems like it will trump them all.
Artists Drew Struzan, Martin Ansin and Olly Moss will all be at the convention signing brand new posters of theirs for The Dark Tower, Conan the Barbarian and Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, respectively. Plus, each is being sold as a pre-order THIS WEEK to avoid crazy lines. Mondo is also releasing four new Pacific Rim posters, and that’s just the start.
Below, read all the details on the releases and check out our exclusive reveal of the Moss’ Howl’s Moving Castle. Read More »
Video games and movies have gone hand in hand for a while. Movies have increasingly looked toward the gaming industry for inspiration and story properties, while video games have become increasingly cinematic as they stress good storytelling along with cool graphics and gameplay. That trend has spread into the art world too, where some of the most popular artists in the movie poster game have begun to make art based on video games.
Nowhere is that better seen than at the Los Angeles iam8bit gallery, which debuts its latest video game centric show on June 7: The iam8bit Entertainment System. Over 80 artists from across the globe have tackled all kinds of popular game properties. /Film is proud to give you a sampling of work in the show. We also have the exclusive debuts of work by artists Olly Moss, JC Richard and the team at Phantom City Creative. Each is probably best known for the work with Mondo or Gallery 1988, but here they’ve each tackled old-school video games with their own unique style and sensibility. Check out their work, and much more, below. Read More »
Back in 2010, Marvel hired artist Olly Moss to make a special poster for the cast and crew of Thor. The resulting image, never available for public purchase, blended a bunch of iconic imagery from the film into the outline of Mjolnir. Last year Moss was asked to do similar work for the sequel, Thor: The Dark World. Now that the first trailer has debuted, he has debuted the finished product to the public.
As with work for most sequels, Moss was even more ambitious this time around. He settled on one main image, but for each principal cast member Moss drew custom versions of their character and inserted them into their own poster. Below, see a selection of the images. Read More »
