Here’s the first official poster for Oblivion, the new film from Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. The movie casts Tom Cruise as a drone repairman who is stationed on an Earth that has seen better days, to put things mildly. The first image sells a grand vision of an almost fossilized Manhattan, with Cruise in the now-standard poster stance. After Tron I’m not certain about Kosinski’s storytelling chops, but I know he can deliver visual spectacle, and this poster certainly promises big imagery.
Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo also star, with the script by William Monahan, Karl Gajdusek, and Michael Arndt based on a graphic novel that Kosinski created.

Remember way back before Avatar came out, when news of its behind-the-scenes woes, budget headaches, and unoriginal plotline had some commentators predicting one of the most expensive flops in cinema history? And then how when it actually came out, audiences were so dazzled by the gorgeous world of Pandora that it actually went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time?
Yeah, that probably won’t happen with Empires of the Deep, a troubled and terrible-looking 3D epic that was $130 million and three years in the making. The Chinese-American co-production stars Olga Kurylenko as the the queen of the mermaids, or something, who gets embroiled in an underwater war between various sea creatures and sea monsters, or something. The trailer emphasizes fancy visuals over storytelling and character, but the visuals aren’t even that good to begin with. Watch the video after the jump.

With Labor Day weekend marking the end of the summer movie season — actually, make that the traditional end of summer, period — it’s time to look ahead at the fall and winter offerings on the horizon.

An almost ridiculous amount of information about Terrence Malick‘s latest film, To The Wonder, has made its way online and if it was for almost any other film, I’d advise you to look away. Why would you want to spoil yourself? But this is Terrence Malick, and even if you know the entire plot, musical accompaniment and more about one of his films, odds are nothing can come close to ruining the surprises he has in store once you sit down in the theater.
To The Wonder will have it’s world premiere this weekend at the Venice Film Festival and stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, and Javier Bardem. I’ve made no secret of my disdain for the recent Total Recall remake, but thankfully Colin Farrell‘s 2012 isn’t looking like a total bust. This fall sees him reuniting with his In Bruges director Martin McDonagh for Seven Psychopaths, in which Farrell plays a screenwriter who gets tangled up in a dog-kidnapping scheme gone awry.
Farrell’s In Bruges co-star Brendan Gleeson sits out the nuttiness this time around, but Farrell’s joined by a host of other interesting talents including Sam Rockwell, Woody Harelson, Abbie Cornish, Olga Kurylenko, Christopher Walken, and Tom Waits. We’ve been tracking the development of Joseph Kosinski‘s Oblivion since its earliest Hollywood incarnation. The director of Tron Legacy has been working on the film for almost 10 years and started pitching it in 2009. Since then, he’s seen it set up at multiple studios with different titles and various co-stars. Now, finally, in the Summer of 2012 we have a glimpse at set photos from the film which stars Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo, Morgan Freeman, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and others.
Oblivion is scheduled for an April 26, 2013 release and tells a post-apocalyptic story of a world that’s primarily in the sky because the surface has been destroyed. One day a repairman (Cruise), who works on the desolate and dangerous surface, finds a girl who says she’s on a science experiement from 60 years prior and knows who he is.

After he finished The Tree of Life, director Terrence Malick shot a film that was referred to for quite some time as The Burial. The romance features Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen, Amanda Peet, and Jessica Chastain, and has been the subject of much speculation, as is often the case with Malick’s films.
Now we’ve got one new detail: thanks to the MPAA, we know the film is now called To the Wonder, and has been rated R for “some sexuality/nudity.” Read More »
