Ocean's 8 Cameos

Ocean’s 8 hit theaters this weekend and the Sandra Bullock-starring spin-off from the Ocean’s 11 series debuted at the top of the box office with $41.5 million. That’s enough to give it the biggest opening in the entire heist franchise.

It should come as no surprise that a movie featuring some of the biggest actresses working today did so well at the box office. Audiences have been hungry for female-led movies like this for some time, and why wouldn’t you want to see Sandra Bullock having some fun along with Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and rising star Awkwafina? However, there were almost even more famous faces in the movie that ended up on the cutting room floor, and there’s one missing cameo in particular that we’re rather interested in.

Beware of spoilers for Ocean’s 8 from here on out. Read More »

Ocean’s 8 Inspirations

Every movie seeks inspiration from films made before. Whether the homage is intentional or not, Hollywood is a land known for cannibalizing itself. Ocean’s 8 builds off several pre-existing properties, and we’re not talking about the film’s obvious inspirations, like the Steven Soderbergh trilogy starting in 2001 with Ocean’s Eleven, nor are we discussing the 1960 Frank Sinatra incarnation of the film of the same name.

What Ocean’s 8 does with its story of eight women and the jewel heist they pull off is draw from the crime capers of the pre-Code, studio era, most notably the 1932 features Trouble in Paradise and Jewel Robbery, where each emphasizes a world where women are in control and crime can be a fun adventure all its own.

The result is Ocean’s 8, a new heist movie that doesn’t reboot the series, but rather branches off from it to create a whole new story. Ross and co-writer Olivia Milch took the world created by Steven Soderbergh in his Ocean‘s films, and rebranded it with a new perspective.

Below, Ross talks about the origin of Ocean’s 8, and how the impressive cast helped sell the studio on the concept.

Ocean’s 8 Review

The ingredients to pull off an entertaining heist movie are much the same as those needed to pull off the heist itself. First, there has to be motley crew, each of whom has specific talents that will come in handy at the opportune moment. Then, there needs to be a big enough haul worthy of a cinematic heist, followed by moments of high tension, only to be resolved; and a deserving enough bad guy whose misdeeds are enough that you want other criminals to rob him or her blind.

Ocean’s 8 gets a lot of elements of the heist subgenre correct, but stumbles in setting up an antagonist for the antiheroic ensemble to steal from.
