When George R.R. Martin‘s 1980 novella Nightflyers got its first feature film adaptation in 1987, the sci-fi film was the height of camp: low-budget, self-indulgent, and just plain weird. And though the cable network Syfy has a fair share of shows that embody exactly that kind of camp, its Nightflyers adaptation couldn’t be further from that description. The creepy, bloody, and freaky Nightflyers teaser gives us a glimpse of the serious and brooding Syfy take that Martin’s science-fiction horror story deserves.

After rumors floating around for the better part of a year and an excited blog update from George R.R. Martin himself, Syfy has officially picked up the Nightflyers series.

An adaptation of Martin’s 1980 “haunted starship” novella, Nightflyers has received the green light to begin production, with Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder) penning and producting the series alongside showrunner Daniel Cerone (The Blacklist). The cast includes Boardwalk Empire star Gretchen Mol, The Night Shift‘s Eoin Macken, and more.

There are procrastinators, then there’s George R.R. Martin. The Song of Ice and Fire author may have stepped back from his executive producer role in HBO’s Game of Thrones to focus on finishing his long-in-the-works book The Winds of Winter, but another shiny object has caught his eye lately: Syfy’s TV adaptation of Martin’s 1980 sci-fi horror novella, Nightflyers.

To be fair, Martin has been involved with talks about the series since spring of this year, but he’s back to giving us updates on his blog about the upcoming adaptation. The newest announcement: Syfy has picked up the series for a 10-episode first season.
