It’s going to be an arthouse-friendly summer. Following yesterday’s announcement that Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight would land in theaters Memorial Day weekend, Sony Classics has just set June and July openings for two more upcoming auteur releases, Pedro Almodovar‘s I’m So Excited and Woody Allen‘s Blue Jasmine.
The news is less positive for DreamWorks’ animation slate, as Mr. Peabody & Sherman has been pushed from late 2013 to early 2014, knocking Me and My Shadow off the schedule altogether. And finally, rounding out this batch of release date updates is Last Vegas, which is moving up to avoid the crowded Christmas slate. Hit the jump to keep reading.

Even as we anticipate this year’s big animated pictures, including Pixar’s Brave, we’re already getting curious about two projects that have been simmering for a while but won’t hit for another couple of years. After the jump, check out a fresh bit of concept art from Pinocchio, a 3D stop-motion project being directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, and take a peek at the title characters from DreamWorks Animation’s 3D CG-animated Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

Even his brief stint in rehab doesn’t seem to have slowed down Gerard Butler much at all. With Movie 43, Playing the Field, and Of Men and Mavericks all due out this year, and Hunter Killer, Thunder Run, Brilliant, and How to Train Your Dragon 2 already on his upcoming slate, the Scottish star has booked yet another role. Described as “Die Hard in the White House,” Olympus Has Fallen will see Butler starring as an ex-Secret Service agent who’s called upon to serve his country once more when terrorists take over 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Butler is also set to produce the action thriller from newbie writers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, which is set up at Millennium. No director has been announced at this time, but with production scheduled for a September start we expect we’ll hear some news on that front soon. [THR]

Disney and Pixar have always been the undisputed champions of animation but a new contender has been rising in the ranks over the last several years: DreamWorks. The studio that brought us the Shrek films, Antz, Chicken Run, Madagascar, Bee Movie and many others has been fighting the good fight for the better part of a decade and while they have yet to over take Disney and Pixar, their upcoming slate sounds like they’re once again swinging for the fences. On Tuesday, DreamWorks Animation announced their upcoming slate all the way from this summer’s Kung Fu Panda 2 through 2014 when they’ll release How To Train Your Dragon 2 on June 20. In between, they’re preparing original films featuring the likes of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher, Jude Law, Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and many others. Briefly: When we had the first announcement of the Rocky and Bullwinkle spin-off film Mr. Peabody and Sherman, which will feature Robert Downey, Jr. voicing the time-traveling dog Mr. Peabody, we mentioned that concept art of the canine would soon be coming down the line. Here it is and…yeah, that’s Mr. Peabody, all right. Same basic look, albeit with more detailed, expressive eyes. I suppose there’s a bit of Robert Downey, Jr. in there, but not too much.
Jeffrey Ventimilia and Joshua Sternin (The Simpsons, Yogi Bear) wrote the script, and as you’d expect it will feature Mr. Peabody and Sherman using the WABAC machine to travel through time, the better to introduce Mr. Peabody’s ‘pet boy’ Sherman to history. What historical figures will appear? We don’t know, but expect those details in the coming weeks. A telling of the starring characters’ origin story is reportedly part of the script. The film will be fully CGI, and 3D.
