It’s been a very slow couple of weeks for television, as most shows go on hiatus for the holidays. But now that New Year’s Day is in our rearview mirror, it’s time to dive back into some returning favorites and get to know some promising newbies.
In the former category are Showtime’s House of Lies and Masters of Sex, while the latter includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s variety show HitRecord on TV. This morning Megan Fox, Ed Helms, and Jessica Alba announced the nominations for the 2013 Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the event, is famous for nominating films and performances simply based on their star factor — if there’s an actor that members of the HFPA want to hang out with, they’re sure to get a nomination.
But the HFPA is great at putting on a show, and so the Golden Globes generate a lot of attention every year. And, as the NY Times points out, with the Globes nominations coming just days before Oscar nomination voting starts, there’s a possibility that nominations here could affect Oscar voting. The Best Picture nomination set includes what is already becoming a standard set of awards favorites, such as Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty, but there are also nominations for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and Django Unchained. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen picked up a few nominations, actually, which was one of the big surprises.

Fans of FX’s Louie will no doubt be thrilled to check out this unrevealing but artsy teaser for the show’s third season, but it’s Showtime that steals most of the spotlight in today’s TV Bits. The premium cable network has a new poster for Episodes, a new teaser for Homeland, and possibly even a new love interest for Dexter. Also after the jump:

Who’s ready for a round up of TV news? Jorge Garcia, best known as Hurley from Lost, is re-teaming with Lost producers J.J. Abrams and Elizabeth Sarnoff to start on their mysterious Fox pilot Alcatraz and we’ve finally got some details on the plot. That same station has moved another Abrams property, Fringe, to the notorious purgatory known as Friday night. NBC’s Community is doing a fully animated Christmas episode and a sneak preview has come online and the new Showtime comedy series Episodes, about the American tendency to remake British shows, now has a trailer.
