M. Night Shyamalan, Will Smith and Jaden Smith are currently in Costa Rica shooting the Summer 2013 blockbuster After Earth and it seems like the trio are dead set on keeping the fans involved in the action. Shyamalan has been posting several behind the scenes shots at the film’s jungle location and Smith’s camp is even getting into the mix, posting our first look at the father and son as they’ll appear in the film. Will is aged up and Jaden is much more clean cut, as they’ll play a father and son who return to Earth 1000 years after the planet has been abandoned. M. Night Shyamalan is mere weeks away from getting back in the director’s chair for his Will Smith/Jaden Smith sci-fi epic After Earth and he’s already begun to use social media to tease us all about it.

The director of Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense recently tweeted two photos from the production offices of the film, which is about a family who crash lands on Earth 1000 years after humans have left the planet. The story centers on what happens when a heroic father (Will Smith) is captured, forcing his underachieving son (Jaden Smith) to save him. It also reportedly stars Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo to round out the futuristic family.

Gore Verbinski‘s The Lone Ranger was forced to make some changes when Disney balked at its $250 million price tag, but happily, it doesn’t seem the cuts have stopped the project from continuing to land some solid talent. Deadline reports that rising star James Badge Dale is now the frontrunner to join the cast in the role of Dan Reid. The older brother of the titular character (Armie Hammer), Dan Reid is an ex-ranger and hero himself. Johnny Depp, Ruth Wilson, Tom Wilkinson, Barry Pepper, Helena Bonham Carter, and Dwight Yoakum also star in the Western, which is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

The one possible downside to this news for Dale’s fans, however, is that if he officially boards Lone Ranger, it’ll pull him out of the running to play John McClane Jr. in A Good Day to Die Hard. Either way, though, Dale’s obviously on his way up. He was most recently seen in last year’s Shame, and will next appear in this month’s The Grey opposite Liam Neeson. In addition, he has two more high-profile projects, Flight and World War Z lined up for this year. Lone Ranger is scheduled to enter production next month.

After the jump, Orphan and The Hunger Games star Isabelle Fuhrman buddies up with Jaden Smith.

M. Night Shyamalan‘s next film, After Earth, came pre-packaged with its two leads: Will and Jaden Smith. The pair will play a father-son duo whose spaceship crash lands on Earth 1,000 years after humans were forced to leave the planet. Now The Hollywood Reporter says the ladies in their lives are close to being cast and they’ll be played by Zoe Kravitz, who was recently seen in X-Men First Class, and Sophie Okonedo, best known for her Oscar-nominated work in Hotel Rwanda. They’d play the daughter and wife of the family, respectively.

The casting news actually comes with a few new details on the plot too and you can read those after the jump. Read More »

Polarizing director M. Night Shyamalan recently joined Twitter and revealed a few things about his upcoming collaboration with Will Smith. Back in April, it was announced Shyamalan would direct both Will and his son Jaden Smith in a movie tentatively titled One Thousand A.E. about what happens when a young boy and his father’s spaceship crash lands on Earth one thousand years after humans abandoned it. Shyamalan recently tweeted that he’s nine weeks away from shooting and that the film is now titled After Earth. Read more after the jump. Read More »

M Night Shyamalan Joins Twitter and Facebook

Say what you will about M Night Shyamalan, but one thing this filmmaker isn’t is up to date on the latest promotional services offered by the internet. He only joined the web two years ago with a untraditional explorable haunted mansion website MNightShyamalan.com. And now M Night has finally decided to open up Twitter and Facebook accounts.  While his Twitter and Facebook are currently unverified, links to both of the accounts were shared on Google+ by screenwriter Gary Whitta. Seems good enough as verified to me, considering Whitta wrote Night’s upcoming film One Thousand A.E..

Once the hottest new director in the business, Night’s public reputation has reached an all time low after the release of The Happening and The Last Airbender. Even the mention of Night’s name as producer in trailers for Devil resulted in groans in theaters around the world. Entering the social webspace might allow the filmmaker to connect directly with his fans and critics, and repair the relationship while he goes into production, on what many believe, will be the filmmaker’s comeback film.

Briefly: M. Night Shyamalan isn’t messing around with the preparation for his next film, the sci-fi feature One Thousand A.E. (Or the execs at Sony and Overbrook Entertainment aren’t messing around.) The film is set to star Will and Jaden Smith as ” a father and son who crash-land on Earth one thousand years after mankind has abandoned the planet. The crash leaves the elder Smith badly injured, and it’s up to the boy to find help in what is now a strange and dangerous place.”

While Shyamalan is known for writing his own films, even The Last Airbender, this new project started with a script by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) which Shyamalan rewrote. Then Stephen Gaghan, who wrote Traffic and wrote and directed Syriana, stepped in to “get the script in shooting shape.” Now he’s likely to continue fine-tuning the script before the film shoots in February.  Shyamalan’s scripts have increasingly become the major shortcoming in his work, so with any luck the revisions by Gaghan will result in a film that is a lot more successful as a story than the last few movies from the director. Has anyone actually ordered a movie off DirecTV‘s controversial Premium Video On Demand service? Beginning in April, several studios teamed up with the cable provider to offer their movies only two months after they hit theaters for the price of $29.95, much to the dismay of theater owners and filmmakers alike. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “there is persistent buzz that it has fallen flat among consumers.” Still, major filmmakers are continuing to stand up against the service, probably because as the summer season wears on, the selections will get better than the currently, and soon to be, available Sucker Punch or Battle: Los Angeles.

Previously, filmmakers like James Cameron, Michael Bay, Peter Jackson and more signed an open letter written by the National Association of Theater Owners vehemently attacking this service and now Christopher Nolan, Jon Favreau, Quentin Tarantino, M. Night Shyamalan, David Dobkin, Mark Boal and others have also signed the letter. We’ve printed it in the past, but you can once again read it after the jump. Read More »
