When some moviegoers think of Universal, they think Universal Monsters. The Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Creature and more all featured in classic movies at the studio, and have since become Universal trademarks. 2012 is the 100th anniversary of the studio. To celebrate, they’re attempting to reinvent the Monsters brand in the home market, beginning with a reinvention of the Wolfman.

This summer we started to hear rumblings that Universal was prepping a new Wolfman movie, and that this might essentially be a reboot of the character, and one that acts like the recent The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, didn’t happen.
Those reports were partially correct. Roger Corman veteran Louis Morneau (Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead; The Hitcher II: I’ve Been Waiting; Bats), tipped as the director for this project a few months back, started production today on a film called, for now, Untitled Werewolf Thriller. Stephen Rea, Steven Bauer, Ed Quinn, Nia Peeples, Guy Wilson, Adam Croasdell and Rachel DiPillo are in the cast. The last time we heard about Universal’s future plans for The Wolfman, the report was that the studio is essentially planning to pretend the 2010 film by Joe Johnston (who stepped in at the last minute) never existed. A new film called Werewolf, written by Michael Tabb, is supposedly the angle Universal will take to further exploit the classic horror property. And now the film might have a director: Louis Morneau.
