It doesn’t sound like any number of clapping hands will save Joe Wright‘s latest adaptation of Pan from being a huge failure for Warner Bros. Pictures, after a dismal performance at the box office this past weekend.
The adaptation of J.M. Barrie‘s classic fairy tale cost about $150 million to make, and that’s not including the hefty marketing costs. However, when Pan hit theaters this weekend, it opened at #3 with just over $15 million in the United States and only around $25 million from 54 international markets. It’s safe to say the Pan box office is a disaster. So what does this mean for the studio? Read More »

The new version of J.M. Barrie’s classic fairytale doesn’t hit theaters until October 9th, pushed back from an original summer release earlier this year, but the premiere of Pan from director Joe Wright just had its premiere across the pond this weekend, and the first reviews are pouring in.
The trailers for the film starring Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara and newcomer Levi Miller have painted quite the visual spectacle with energetic adventure and a live-action take on the familiar tale that takes to the skies in a way that we haven’t really seen before, complete with flying pirate ships and an origin story of Peter Pan where he begins as a friend of James Hook, only later to become sworn enemies.
So how does the movie fare? Get the Pan early buzz after the jump! Read More »

Our next live-action fairy tale retelling comes not from Disney, but from Warner Bros. and the mind of Joe Wright. Pan is an origin story of sorts for both Peter Pan (Levi Miller) and his mortal enemy, Captain Hook (played here by Garrett Hedlund in dashing Indiana Jones mode). Rounding out the cast are Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily and Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard. Watch the Pan trailer after the jump. Read More »
The story of Peter Pan is reconfigured in Pan, from Atonement and Hanna director Joe Wright. While J.M. Barrie‘s most well-known creation, the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, is a perpetually immature child, there’s still room in his youth for a backstory.
And this version of Peter seems quite different, with — at least briefly — a strong sense of purpose and determination. See him in action along with Garrett Hedlund as a young James Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, and Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard (who even has a ship that bears his own face) in the new Pan trailer. Perhaps the first images from Pan weren’t quite what you expected, but we’re trusting in the guy who created a successful new fairy tale in Hanna to warp the Peter Pan story into a new shape that makes sense in the end. This Pan trailer shows a big, bright, and possibly strange take on the J.M. Barrie stories, seemingly with a story structure that doesn’t bother with a “Peter Pan in the real world” setup, but just goes straight for a fantasy tale. There’s a lot of light, pretty stuff here that positions this as a fluffy fantasy, but then there’s a shot of Hugh Jackman towards the end of the trailer that makes us wonder if this has something more dark in mind, too.
Joe Wright directs Levi Miller as Peter, and Jackman not as Hook, but as Blackbeard. Garrett Hedlund steps in as a young, romantically appealing version of Hook, with Rooney Mara playing Tiger Lily. Check out the Pan trailer below. (We’ve also got four Pan character posters, with Blackbeard’s showing that yes, that’s definitely meant to be a bad wig worn by the pirate.)

“This isn’t exactly the Neverland story you know.” That’s director Joe Wright‘s description of his Peter Pan origin story Pan, and so far he seems to be telling the truth. Case in point: the villainous pirate in this one is not Captain Hook but Blackbeard, played by Hugh Jackman.
The hero is still a little boy named Peter Pan, though, played by Levi Miller. Hit the jump to see the first Pan images featuring Jackman and Miller, plus the first Pan poster with Miller. Read More »
Joe Wright‘s Peter Pan origin story Pan has a few very recognizable cast members. Hugh Jackman will play Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund will be Hook, and Rooney Mara is in talks to play Tiger Lily. But for Peter, Wright and his producers are looking at younger, new talent. And so Levi Miller, whose most recognizable role at this point is probably an appearance on Terra Nova, has been chosen as the new young Peter. Read More »
