Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we get naked, visit a war zone, get intimately familiar with some caged heat, rage against the government machine, wonder at how Dr. Who could stoop so low, and give it up for bad dubbing.

What is it with omnibus films of late? In the past few years there have been Chacun son cinema, New York, I Love You, Paris Je T’aime and a couple others. And now there’s a plan to put together a seven-part film about live in contemporary Cuba, called 7 Days in Havana. The hook here is the directorial lineup, which includes Benicio Del Toro and Gaspar Noe. That’s good enough for me — I’ll spend a week in Cuba with these guys. Read More »
