Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat. There is absolutely no guarantee that Kick Ass 2 will ever exist as a movie. It exists as a comic book (the sixth issue was released just last week) so if you’re curious what happens next to Kick Ass and Hit Girl, that’s your best bet. For a while, Matthew Vaughn was speaking as if he would direct a sequel despite the disappointing box office of the original and his stars, like Chloë Moretz, suggested they would return. But even with all of that, there was no guarantee.

There’s now a significant update of sorts. Co-screenwriter Jane Goldman has been quoted saying neither she or Vaughn have any plans to write the screenplay, Vaughn isn’t likely to direct, but he’ll probably produce and is currently talking to someone who is very interested in writing and directing. I’ll say this for Mark Millar: the Kick-Ass creator/writer is ever-optimistic. He’s been talking about a sequel to Matthew Vaughn‘s 2010 film for months now, despite many indicators pointing to the fact that the liklihood of the film ever materializing grows smaller every day.

Now Millar admits that Kick-Ass co-writers Vaughn and Jane Goldman are unlikely to return to the material for the sequel, assuming it ever happens. If we do see Kick-Ass 2, it will almost certainly be under the command of a new director. Read More »

Matthew Vaughn is sick. Literally. On a Tuesday morning in late May, the director of the upcoming X-Men First Class called us from London with a case of tonsillitis. The timing couldn’t be worse. Vaughn is about to release the biggest movie of his career, 20th Century Fox’s summer superhero tentpole, X-Men First Class, a film that serves as both a prequel and reboot to a popular series of films that began in 2000 with Bryan Singer’s X-Men. Starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as younger versions of Charles and Erik, who will grow up to be Professor X and Magneto respectively, the Sixties-set film tells the origin story of the X-Men infused with the exciting action and fantastic social conceits that make the X-Men great.

On top of that, the film is solid; an entertaining love letter to the X-Men franchise that’s both a treat for fans but totally accessible to non-fans. Most of that is thanks to magnetic lead performances and a well-thought out screenplay that Vaughn co-wrote along with writing partner Jane Goldman and Thor writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. X-Men First Class is up there with the best of the Singer X-Men movies and does its job so well that the franchise can go anywhere from here.

In our short 10-minute interview Vaughn talked about that, how he regretted not making X-Men: The Last Stand, how the insane profitability of Kick Ass (you read that right) could lead to Kick Ass 2 and much more. Check it out after the break. Read More »

Don’t listen to anything Mark Millar says and don’t believe everything you read on IMDb: Screenwriter Jane Goldman confirmed to Absolute Radio that Kick-Ass 2 is not happening, at least not at the moment. She says its not in active development, and all the creative forces behind the first film are busy elsewhere. They’d love to make a sequel and “maybe the moment will be right one day, hopefully.” Watch Goldman explain in a video embedded after the jump.

But there’s really no screenplay in progress, says Goldman, and it looks like whatever Vaughn makes next won’t be Kick-Ass 2. Read More »
