This is a drag. Micheal K. Williams, known to many as Omar from The Wire and an accomplished and well-rounded actor in general, was a favorite for the title role in Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained. That part went to the more easily marketable Jamie Foxx, but over the last few months Williams has said that Tarantino wanted him in the movie badly enough to write a part specifically for him.

Today in The Continuing Adventures of Disney’s Lone Ranger, that film production cliffhanger that I’m not certain actually has people on pins and needles to discover what happens next, we’ve got budget cuts and stalwart friendship. One of those things is, at least, a core value of the Lone Ranger.
What we’ve known so far is that producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, star Johnny Depp and screenwriter Justin Haythe handed Disney a script that was going to cost well over $250m — closer to $275m — and the studio rightly balked. So for the past couple weeks there has been a very public back and forth over the film, with Disney exec Rich Ross saying he wants to make it, but only for a much lower price. Script changes are being made; supernatural elements are being (thankfully) cut; and there was even discussion about whether the film might get made with a director other than Gore Verbinski.
So what’s happening now? The budget is lower, but perhaps not low enough, and Disney is looking at ponying up more than seems reasonable for a Western, or not making the movie at all. Read on… Read More »
The Lone Ranger has been slowly picking a path back to movie screens. In September word filtered out that Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was in talks to direct a new version of the story for producer Jerry Bruckheimer, with Johnny Depp in the cast.

In 2007, it was announced that Jerry Bruckheimer would be producing a new adaptation of The Lone Ranger, with Pirates of the Caribbean/Shrek screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio penning the script. A year later, in 2008, it was revealed that Johnny Depp had been cast as Tonto, and George Clooney was rumored to be in talks to play The Lone Ranger. Over the summer it was rumored that Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco, Prince of Persia) was in talks to direct. We haven’t heard anything since August… until now.

Keanu Reeves will star in Jekyll, a modern day retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 classic novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for Universal Pictures. The film will be directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, the filmmaker behind the Sundance hit Bronson and the 1996 Danish action crime thriller Pusher (you may have heard David Chen ramble on about this film, and the trilogy it spawned, in a previous /Filmcast). The film is being scripted by Justin Haythe, the BAFTA-nominated screenwriter of Revolutionary Road.

Titanic stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have signed on to star in Revolutionary Road for Dreamworks. Winslet’s husband and American Beauty director Sam Mendes will direct the film. This will be the first time he has directed either star.
