I should have skipped out of The Collection five, maybe ten minutes after it began. It took just that much time to realize that the movie really is only a basic exploration of a simple premise, and ultimately (for different reasons) not for me. The sequel to 2009’s The Collector is once again written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, with Dunstan directing. Crafty masked machinist killer the Collector returns to menace more innocents, this time losing hold of Arkin (Josh Stewart), one of his last victims, as he attacks a rave full of revelers and takes a new living prisoner, Elena.
Knowing based on the Collector’s previous patterns that Elena (Emma Fitzpatrick) is likely alive, her father’s commando-like right-hand man recruits Arkin to pursue the killer along with a small team of mercs. This does not end well. Presumably, that’s a good thing, as there’s really no reason to watch The Collection other than to see the various ways that characters are dispatched. Read More »
The so-called “torture porn” genre is mostly dead, but has given way to a sort of action-adventure horror that fuses elements of that particular vision of horror with other ideas. That seems to be the slot in which to place The Collection, which comes from Saw IV-VI writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. The latter also directs, and the film is his sequel to the 2009 effort The Collector.
The story kicks off with a girl (Emma Fitzpatrick) going to a secret party that turns into a murder spree for a killer known as The Collector. Her father hires a merc crew to retrieve her, and the film seems to go down the Aliens path, as the team recruits Arkin (Josh Stewart), the one guy who escaped the Collector’s lair to guide them in an effort to take him down.
A new trailer shows off some of the action and murderous ideas at play in the film; check it out below. Read More »
Lots of casting news has been flying about for the past few days, and in the wake of Comic Con we’re still catching up on a few things. In this particular casting break you’ll find:
- Nick Nolte will lend his wonderfully grizzled talent to Robert Redford’s new film.
- A Stargate SG-1 actor gets a role in The Dark Knight Rises.
- Jay Chou stars in a new Chinese action film, complete with a teaser. Read More »
Briefly: Given that Christopher Nolan is now shooting The Dark Knight Rises, we probably won’t see too many more notable names added to the cast. In fact, this might be the last: Josh Stewart from The Collector and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has taken an unknown role in the film. Like many of the other recent cast announcements, his part may not be significant, but he joins what is looking like an impressive ensemble cast.
So we’ve got returning actors Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne / Batman; Michael Caine as Alfred; Gary Oldman as James Gordon; and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, with newcomers Tom Hardy as Bane; Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle; Juno Temple as a “street-smart Gotham girl;” Josh Pence as young Ra’s al Ghul; Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, “a Gotham City beat cop;” Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate; and Matthew Modine, Tom Conti, Joey King, Brett Cullen, Chris Ellis, Daniel Sunjata, Diego Klattenhoff and Burn Gorman. Quite a lineup, and you know we’ll keep you posted (possibly in Superhero Bits) with any new pieces of info that come out. [Variety]
