Preacher reviews

One of this year’s most anticipated screenings at the SXSW Film Festival wasn’t for a film at all, but for a show. AMC brought the very first episode of its long-developing Preacher adaptation to the event, much to the anxious anticipation of the source material’s many fans.

Based on the graphic novel by Garth Ennis and Steve DillonPreacher follows, well, a preacher, who finds himself in possession of a very unusual power. He sets out on a quest to confront God, and along the way joins up with a former flame, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and an Irish vampire, Cassyidy (Joseph Gilgun). And by all accounts, the story is even stranger than that description makes it sound.

Show creators Seth RogenEvan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin (the latter of whom will also serve as showrunner) have been very upfront about the fact that their series would not be a letter-for-letter, panel-for-panel adaptation of the source material. And Ennis, for what it’s worth, doesn’t seem to mind one bit. So the real question here is how capably they’ll have captured the spirit of the novel. We’ve rounded up some of the Preacher reviews after the jump.

Preacher trailer

Preacher has been battling to reach the screen in some form since the late ’90s, when Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon‘s controversial, critically praised comic series was still a new kid on the block. Now, years after Kevin Smith and Sam Mendes and Mark Steven Johnson tried and failed to produce big screen and small screen versions, the infamous series is finally arriving as a show on AMC. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin are behind this incarnation. Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, and Joseph Gilgun are playing the story’s central heroes. And now, the first trailer for the series is here. Just be careful – people who associate with Preacher tend to get struck by lightning if they ever step near a church again.

‘Preacher’ Casts the Vampire Cassidy

Preacher casting

The producers of AMC’s Preacher pilot seemingly haven’t fully locked the actor who’ll play Jesse Custer, the title character, but the rest of the major cast is slowly being shown to the publicIan Colletti plays the disfigured young man Eugene Root, aka Arseface, while Ruth Negga plays Tulip, the woman whose fierce love for Jesse is matched only by the ferocity she unleashes on anyone who crosses her.

Now the third person in the primary friendship triangle will be played by British actor Joseph Gilgun (This Is England). In this case, “person” is being generous, as Cassidy is a vampire, and a particularly voracious one at that, if not exactly in the traditional blood-drinking sense. (He does that, too.)
