Bored to Death

It’s been a couple of years since we heard HBO was developing a Bored to Death movie, and we’ve heard next to nothing about it since. But you can rest assured Bored to Death creator Jonathan Ames hasn’t forgotten about it. He recently stated that a film still “could happen,” and offered an update on the script. Fans of Bored to Death no longer have to feel sad and lonely. HBO is now officially developing a feature film based on the cult detective series that stars Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zack Galifianakis. Show creator Jonathan Ames will write and produce the film, which is described as follows: “Jonathan, Ray, and George reunite to fight crime, commit crime, lose their minds, and fail-at-love in a Bored to Death feature-length slapstick adventure. ‘Bored to Death’ Movie in the Works?

Strong as HBO’s current lineup is, it’s simply not possible to squeeze in that many exciting new shows without cutting out a few of the old ones. And late last year, one of the unfortunate casualties of the updated programming turned out to be the excellent Bored to Death.

While the noir-inspired comedy never really kicked ass in the ratings, it developed enough of a cult following (including yours truly) that its passing was noticed and mourned. So naturally, it’s now headed in the same direction as so many other brilliant-but-cancelled series, with talk of a potential movie down the line. American Splendor directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini return to Sundance with The Extra Man, a comedy which will screen in the Premieres section. Based on a novel by Jonathan Ames (Bored to Death), the film tells the story of a down-and-out playwright who escorts wealthy widows in Manhattan’s Upper East Side takes a young aspiring writer under his wing. The cast includes Kevin Kline, Paul Dano, John C. Reilly, and Katie Holmes. After the jump we have photos, a poster, and a very extended plot synopsis from this upcoming film.

Bored to Death‘s Jonathan Ames – the show’s creator, writer and all around bossman, as opposed to lead character, also called Jonathan Ames – has been a prolific creator across many media. Not only is there the show there are comic books, essays, novels, stage shows, memoirs. What we’re most concerned with here though, I suppose, are his works for cinema.

Currently in post production is The Extra Man, directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, and co-scripted by the directors and Ames. Coming up later, a possible picture based upon Ames’ comic strip The Alcoholic and a big screen version of Wake Up, Sir! that the novelist has written himself.
