Here’s the first trailer for NBC’s new incarnation of DC’s magician John Constantine, and it looks… pretty good! Scoring Neil Marshall (The Descent, various Game of Thrones episodes) to direct the pilot was a good move, and Matt Ryan looks properly selfish and capable as Constantine. See, while the Keanu Reeves movie directed by Francis Lawrence has its charm, and captured great facets of the DC character, it was still a pretty far cry from the stories that made Hellblazer a must-read series, once upon a time. Looks like David Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman Vs. Superman) is getting his hands on John Constantine before Guillermo del Toro can work him into the proposed “Justice League Dark” movie. Goyer is working with The Mentalist exec producer Daniel Cerone to create a show for NBC in which DC’s most devious, mean-eyed, magic-using Englishman will come to life.
To boil him down to basics, Constantine is a selfish guy who wrestles with his own nature as he fights the forces of darkness; his friends have an unpleasant tendency to end up dead in the process. Read More »
Not long ago word came down that Guillermo del Toro is working to produce a film, originally referred to as Heaven Sent and now tentatively called Dark Universe, that will feature supernatural DC Comics characters such as Swamp Thing and John Constantine. We didn’t know much about the movie at the time, but now in a new interview del Toro talks about finally hiring a writer — who he refuses to name — and giving some more details about the potential character roster of the film.
