It always happens at this time every year: producers go to the Cannes marketplace with armfuls of potential projects, and we get a flood of casting reports as actors are attached left and right. Some of these will get made, some won’t, and some will get made with an entirely different cast.
One of the big ones today is a boxing drama called The Bleeder, which has Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber and Christina Hendricks set to appear. Before The Fighter I’d have guessed this might be one that we’d hear about during Cannes and never again, but in the wake of that success it might happen. The Bleeder has Jeff Feuerzeig (The Devil and Daniel Johnston) directing from a script he wrote with Jerry Stahl, based on ” the true story of former New Jersey heavyweight boxer and womanizer Chuck Wepner who boxed 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali and inspired Sylvester Stallone to pen Rocky.” That connection to Rocky might be all this needs to put it over the top. Johnny Depp must have really enjoyed his time with director Rob Marshall while making Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides because the two will now, officially, team up to remake the 1934 film The Thin Man. Depp had been developing the project for sometime and it was previously rumored that he wanted Marshall on board. Obviously, that rumor was true. In addition we already knew that Jerry Stahl (Permanent Midnight) would be writing the screenplay based on the original Dashiell Hammett novel but now he’ll be backed by producers Marshall and John DeLuca. Read more about the film after the break. Read More »
Last year, there was news that Johnny Depp wanted to star in a new version of The Thin Man, based on the Dashiell Hammett novel that spawned a six-film series in the ’30s and ’40s. He roped in his Pirates of the Caribbean director Rob Marshall, but we haven’t heard much about the project since. Would this one move forward or, like other films to which Johnny Depp has been attached over the years, would it hit the back burner?
Right now, the film is taking a small step forward as a screenwriter has been hired. Jerry Stahl (Permanent Midnight) will adapt the novel for Warner Bros. Read More »
I love seeing Danny McBride break out as a legit talent — The Foot Fist Way, Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express got him in front of audiences, but the HBO show Eastbound and Down really made his name. Now, as the second season of that show prepares to air, there’s word that McBride will get to star in Bullies, based on his own story idea.
The film follows “two brothers who finally get a comeuppance after bullying people their whole lives.” Curious to hear who’ll co-star with McBride (the plot sounds like it could so easily be a Will Ferrell / John C. Reilly affair) but we do know that Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul will write, and McBride will produce with David Gordon Green, Jody Hill and Matt Reilly. [Deadline]
