In 2006, Billy Corben‘s documentary Cocaine Cowboys, about the rise of the drug trade in ’70s and ’80s Miami, became the jumping-off point for more than one project. By 2008 HBO had commissioned a pilot script for a series based on the documentary, and for several years a feature film has been in slow development also based on the doc.

We just heard that David O. Russell is attached to direct the feature version. And now, after being dormant for some time, the HBO series is coming back to life with a new pilot script from The Pacific writer Michelle Ashford. Read More »

Briefly: Jon Spaihts immediately became a writer to watch when he was tapped to write an Alien prequel for Ridley Scott, after his scripts Shadow 19 and Passengers drew interest from studios and actors. Now his Alien prequel has become Prometheus in the hands of Damon Lindelof and Mr. Scott, so it seems it’s time for Mr. Spaihts to move on.

So Jon Spaihts is continuing his relationship with Jerry Bruckheimer, for whom the writer is already tapped to pen an adaptation of the graphic novel World War Robot. Now he’s sold another pitch to Bruckheimer, and while we don’t know the details of the story, it is being called a ‘space adventure.’  [Variety]

Despite The Tourist performing well-below domestic expectations, no one would argue the drawing power of Johnny Depp. The famously reclusive actor generally stays out of the spotlight long enough to pick and choose whatever projects he wants to do and then he usually does them incredibly well. A few years back, Depp had a reputation for being so choosy with his roles that he probably never would have agreed to a big budget sequel, let alone two of them.

Fast-forward to 2011 and Johnny Depp has his fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides peaking up over the horizon (it opens May 20) and in a new interview he says that he’d even be game for a fifth installment. Just in case, Disney has already rehired Terry Rossio, who co-wrote the first four films, to write a script for a fifth. Read the exact quote and more after the break. Read More »

Jerry Bruckheimer on X-Men: First Class

This isn’t necessarily news, but I thought it was worth sharing… Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is currently shooting at Pinewood Studios, the same lot where Matthew Vaughn is shooting X-Men: First Class. Super mega producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates) tweeted a “set report” earlier today:

“X-Men Origins also shooting here at Pinewood Studios. Occasionally see weird creature appendages being carried around.”

Weird creature appendages? Interesting and exciting…

Tony Scott has a mile-high stack of projects on his plate and seems about as interested in talking Top Gun as Fred Phelps is in reasonable discourse, but that might not stop Paramount from trying to light a fire under him to make Top Gun 2. Word now is that, after years of rumors that would (hopefully) put Tom Cruise back in the cockpit, Paramount is pitching Jerry Bruckheimer, Tony Scott and Tom Cruise on the sequel. Quick, before the ’80s nostalgia wave becomes a ’90s nostalgia wave! Otherwise they’ll have to sequelize Days of Thunder instead. Read More »

Jerry Bruckheim'er photos from the set of Pirates of the Caribbean 4

Back in the old days, people would sneak onto the side of a movie set and snap unwanted photos, and send them to a movie news website for us and other to post. Now it seems like all the set photos are coming from the filmmakers themselves. This morning we have new set photos from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Cowboys and Aliens, taken not by a tourist on the sidelines or paparazi, but by director Jon Favreau and Producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
