anomalisa poster

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Anomalisa is my favorite film of 2015 and one of the most unique and shattering experiences of my moviegoing life. Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson‘s stop-motion animated drama is a once-in-a-lifetime work of art. Cynical and beautiful and heartbreaking and hilarious, it is an enthralling, painfully human tour of the emotional spectrum. It’s the kind of movie that sinks its claws into you and leaves a mark. I was lucky enough to see Anomalisa at Fantastic Fest earlier this year and I found myself spending the rest of the festival thinking about, grappling with it, and trying to come to terms with what it had to say about its characters and their relationships. Few films pulverize your soul with such direct, expertly crafted force.

In other words, I couldn’t be happier to help premiere a new poster for the film, which casts a spotlight on David Thewlis‘ character Michael Stone. Check out the new Anomalisa poster after the jump.

The Hateful Eight Clips

Even though plenty of people are anxious to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 12 days, let’s not forget that one week later we’ll get to see another of the highly anticipated films of 2015. Quentin Tarantino has his eighth film getting a unique release beginning on December 25th with The Hateful Eight getting a 70mm roadshow release (with specific location details yet to be officially revealed) that includes extra footage and an intermission.

But if you’re a little impatient, you can watch eight minutes of The Hateful Eight clips right now to hold you over until Chtistmas gets here. It certainly won’t look as good as it will on a 70mm projection, but it’s the best we can do. Read More »

Anomalisa

The wait is almost over for Charlie Kaufman‘s sophomore directorial effort. Co-directed by Duke Johnson and written by Kaufman, Anomalisa is a gorgeous and moving love story about a man who can’t accept love. Oh, and it happens to be a stop-motion picture. After the jump, watch an Anomalisa featurette that shows how the filmmakers made it happen.

anomalisa trailer

There are still two months remaining in 2015, but I find it hard to believe that I will see a better movie than Anomalisa before the year is out. Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson‘s stop-motion animated drama is an unflinchingly real and achingly human masterpiece. It’s a beautiful recreation of what is feels like to fall in love and a bitter, black-hearted portrait of despair and mundane desperation. It’s about as perfect as movies can get. And it’s done entirely with puppets.

Watch the Anomalisa trailer after the jump.

Hateful Eight poster

We’ve got months to go before Christmas, and I’m in no hurry to see that time evaporate, but the promise of a new Quentin Tarantino film does make the end of the year seem pretty attractive. Now here’s a new The Hateful Eight poster to tease the tense battle of wills Tarantino has created to send off 2015 in style.

You probably know the film’s cast by now — Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Channing Tatum, and Zoe Bell — and that Tarantino and cinematographer Robert Richardson shot the movie in 70mm.

This poster shows John Ruth and Daisy Domergue, the shackled-together characters played by Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh. As the layout suggests, this is just be the first of a set of images presenting the full collection of eight hateful characters.

Hateful Eight images

Quentin Tarantino‘s new film The Hateful Eight sounds in many ways like a return to his roots: it’s nearly a closed-room argument, with an ensemble cast battling out their differences in, if Tarantino’s reputation is anything to go by, increasingly violent ways. That ensemble cast is perhaps better than ever, with Tim Roth providing a link to Tarantino’s debut Reservoir Dogs, and Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Michael MadsenBruce Dern, with a small turn from Channing Tatum.

And then there’s Kurt Russell, who looks more awesome than ever in this role — and that’s saying a lot, considering his history. See him and just about everyone else in new Hateful Eight images below. Read More »
