Tony Kaye got a reputation for being hard-headed during the production of American History X, and though he released the incendiary abortion documentary Lake of Fire in 2006, the years since American History X haven’t been easy for the director when it comes to narrative films. His movie Black Water Transit has been on the shelf for years now, and Kaye seemed like he might be a permanent resident of director jail.
But his new film Detachment is finally getting a release. The film stars Adrien Brody as a substitute teacher who may have more problems than his studens do. The supporting cast is big: Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks, William Petersen, Bryan Cranston, Tim Blake Nelson, Lucy Liu, Blythe Danner, and James Caan, and Brody’s work seems like it might even be as good as the bold pullquotes that decorate the new trailer would suggest. The last big news late last week was that The Departed team of screenwriter William Monahan and director Martin Scorsese would remake the 1974 film The Gambler. James Caan starred in the original as a New York English professor who has a serious gambling addition. Thing is, the film wasn’t just any old movie, at least for the screenwriter, James Toback. The script was a particularly autobiographical one, with Caan’s character being a thinly veiled version of Toback himself.
So when Toback learned of the remake the same way most people did — by reading about it on the internet — he was none too happy. (Especially as he is friends with multiple remake participants, including possible star Leonardo DiCaprio.) Briefly: Adam Sandler is going to play dad to SNL’s Andy Samberg in I Hate You, Dad, and now the same movie is going to see him eventually shacked up with hot teacher Mary McGarricle, played by Susan Sarandon. Sean Anders and John Morris are directing the film, which is about ” a father (Sandler) who moves in on the eve of the wedding of his son (Samberg) and promptly begins feuding with the bride-to-be.” A few more details are after the break. Henry’s Crime, starring Keanu Reeves, James Caan and Vera Farmiga, premiered at TIFF back in September ’10, but we’re just getting a trailer for the film now. There’s a new trailer for Middle Men, the film that follows the career of Christopher Malick. He’s no relation to Terrence Malick; rather, this is the guy who first enabled the proper monetization of porn on the internet. By providing credit card access to porn sites, he essentially became a funnel for cash. We’ve seen one red band clip before, but this trailer is good at capturing the ‘anything goes’ mentality of the early internet days. Read More »
Paramount Pictures has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to George Gallo‘s R-Rated crime dramedy Middle Men. The film, which recently made its world premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, stars Luke Wilson, James Caan, Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht. Middle Men tells the true story of Jack Harris “the straight-laced businessman who helped launch one of the first porn websites” and becomes “caught between the Russian mob, a porn star, the FBI and his family, all while becoming very rich.”
In their film fest review, Variety called it “Boogie Nights’ meets ‘Goodfellas’” and called the film “a sleazy but undeniably intriguing tour of the bottom-feeding netherworld where porn and organized crime do their mutual bump-and-grind.” Watch an extended red band movie trailer for the film embedded after the jump.

Some decent casting notes cropped up in the trade breaks last night, and because I’m just this sort of nice guy I’m about to round up the best for you.
First involves James Caan and Vera Farmiga, who’ve just joined Keanu Reeves in Henry’s Crime. The film, you may remember, is written by Anvil! director Sacha Gervasi, and will be directed by Malcolm Venville, recently of 44-Inch Chest. Farmiga is the love interest for Reeves, who is falsely accused of robbing a bank in Buffalo. Producer Jordan Schur calls the script “a genius comic fable.” Gervasi himself called it “a twisted, romantic comedy, very dark and funny,” which the trades refer to it as a romantic comedy and Capraesque. So who knows what the hell we’ll see out of this one. [Variety]

Vivendi Entertainment has released a new movie trailer for the anthology film project New York, I Love You. The movie is the next film from the producers of Paris, je t’aime, and features another anthology of short films, this time focusing on the stories of love in New York’s five boroughs. I LOVE California, but I’ve always wanted to live in Manhattan (maybe someday). Films like this certainly don’t help my obsessions with “Gotham” and short films.
The film includes short films directed by Jian Wen, Mira Nair, Brett Ratner, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Khapur, Natalie Portman, Fatih Akin, Joshua Marston and Randy Balsmyer. The film’s ensemble cast includes: Bradley Cooper, Andy Garcia, Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Natalie Portman, Irrfan Khan, Emilie Ohana, Orlando Bloom, Christina Ricci, Maggie Q, Ethan Hawke, James Caan, Blake Lively, Drea de Matteo, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Burt Young, Chris Cooper, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman.
