Fans have waited over 15 years for concrete news about a sequel to the 1996 hit film Independence Day. A few months ago, we got some. Co-writers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin confirmed that, yes, they have begun working on the sequels. Tentatively called ID Forever Parts One and Two, the rumor was that the films would take place in present day — about 20 years after the events of the first film — and center on the alien retaliation to human victory. The pair were on hand at the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Film Festival in Hollywood, CA Sunday for a special screening of Independence Day. There they spoke a bit more about the sequels. No major updates, unfortunately, but Emmerich did say they’re attempting to create a mythology that would allow not just one or two movies, but a whole series.

In this summer’s White House Down, director Roland Emmerich will once again wreak havoc on the President’s pad. It’s a place he knows well, having first blown it up 1996′s Independence Day. Ever since that film was released, fans have discussed a sequel and in the past few months, Emmerich and his producer Dean Devlin have confirmed sequels are in the works: ID Forever Part One and ID Forever Part Two.
Emmerich has now revealed the seed that the sequels will grow from, as well as the timeline and the main characters. The films take place about 20 years after the original film, and the world has been rebuilt. Twenty years, it seems, is about how long it takes for the aliens to respond to a distress call their destroyed friends sent out at the end of the first film.
He also revealed he and Devlin have completed two scripts and James Vanderbilt, the writer of The Amazing Spider-Man and White House Down, is currently doing the rewrites.

With director Roland Emmerich currently filming White House Down, there’s not a lot of working going on with the sequels to Independence Day. Producer Dean Devlin has gone on record saying he and Emmerich have cracked the idea for the films and continue to work on them, but it’s not a daily thing. No matter; that doesn’t stop tiny bits of news from leaking about the still hypothetical back-to-back sequels to the hit 1996 film, which gets a 3D re-release next year.
The pair are still referring to the films as ID Forever Part One and ID Forever Part Two and, in a new interview, Emmerich they’ll likely be shot in 2D and up-converted to 3D.
