By now you’ve probably seen dozens of critics’ best-of-2011 lists (including ours!), and noticed some amount of overlap on films like Hugo, Drive, and Tree of Life. But there’s more than one way to gauge a movie’s success, and when it comes to what general audiences are actually watching, a whole different set of titles come out on top.

According to a report just released by Redbox, the Adam Sandler vehicle Just Go With It was the most rented title at its bright red kiosks in 2011, ahead of several other comedies including No Strings Attached, Rango, and The Dilemma. Meanwhile, Fast Five leads the list of the most pirated movies of the year, followed by The Hangover Part II, Thor, and Source Code. Read both lists after the jump.

Rumor: Will DJ Caruso Direct ‘Preacher’?

preacher-banner

[Update: Kevin Smith has corrected some of our history regarding Preacher's development. See below for details. Original article follows.]

It has been a while since we’ve gotten a solid update on the big screen adaptation of the beloved Vertigo comic book series Preacher. A couple years back, Columbia Pictures picked up the rights and hired American Beauty/Road to Perdition director Sam Mendes to helm the project, but the filmmaker dropped out to pursue Bond. John August (Go, Big Fish) penned the script which producer Neil Moretz has said will be the first of a series of films.

In September producer Moretz told Total Film Magazine that “Another unnamed director has apparently signed on.” We haven’t had any leads on this until today. One of my well placed Hollywood spys informs me that Disturbia/Eagle Eye helmer DJ Caruso is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of Preacher. This is said to be all dependent on the box office of his latest film, I Am Number Four. I have not been able to double source this rumor, but I thought I’d throw it out there to get your thoughts?

With just over two months until release, Dreamworks has unleashed the full trailer for I Am Number Four. Based on a sci-fi book by Pittacus Lore (a pen name), the Michael Bay produced film version is directed by D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye) and stars Alex Pettyfer (Beastly) as one of an alien race who escaped to Earth and is now being hunted. Timothy Olyphant and Teresa Palmer are also in the film which, from this new trailer, looks very much like Caruso’s Disturbia infused with alien powers.

I Am Number Four will be released on February 18 in both regular and IMAX formats. (Side note: Dreamworks also announced that Shawn Levy’s Hugh Jackman action film Real Steel is also going to be released in IMAX on October 7). Watch the I Am Number Four trailer after the break. Read More »
