Interview with Grindhouse star Rosario Dawson

Rosario Dawson

On March 25th, we had the opportunity to talk with most of the stars of Grindhouse. We will be posting the interviews leading up until the film’s release on April 6th 2007.

We sat down with Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Rent, 25th Hour) to talk about her role as Abernathy in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. We talked to Rosario about her change from a tom boy to a girlie girl, Kevin Smith’s upcoming romantic comedy, her aspirations to work with Rob Zombie, Eli Roth and Catherine Hardwicke, her comic book series O.C.T.: Occult Crimes Taskforce, and the film she is producing based on the book. But for the most part Rosario hijacked the interview to tell us about her first producing effort, Descent, which will make it’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Dawson was very excited about her new film, so we let her do most of the talking.

Video Footage: Kurt Russell vs. Eli Roth

eliandrussell.jpg

When we sat down with Hostel director and Grindhouse star Eli Roth last week, he mentioned that Quentin forced him to insult Kurt Russell in front of his face during one take. Russell threw a bowl of Nachos at Roth, who apologized endlessly proclaiming his fanboy respect/love for the Escape from New York star.

Kurt Russell’s Favorite Muscle Cars

Grindhouse star Kurt Russell kills women with his 1970 Black Dodge Challenger in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. So we asked the Escape From New York star what his favorite muscle cars were.

“Back when it was happening and I was a kid it was the GTO. That was the street car that you wanted. If you could afford that, that was the car that you had. Now, in movies the GTO never became the it care.”

Naveen Andrews hates Grindhouse Movies

naveenlost.jpgNaveen Andrews had never seen a exploitation film when he auditioned for Robert Rodriguez at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons Hotel in 2005. After he won a role in Planet Terror, he was given a Grindhouse 101 crash course at Quentin Tarantino’s home theater. But the truth is, he hated what he saw.

“They were interminable and they were terrible. I thought they were horrible films, dismal. And the actors seemed to be suffering in them and you just felt sorry for everyone. And I’d look around and I’d see Quentin and Robert laughing like maniacs. I found it funny for about two minutes. I was embarrassed, I was like – what am I not getting here? They obviously see some kind of esthetic here but I can’t see it. I’m still at a loss of what the esthetic actually is. I think it has something to do with an obscene type of humor. “

Andrew blames his opinion on his European upbringing, as he claims the English are real snobs about what films can be considered art.

“But Quentin and Robert could see an esthetic in this extricable genre of filmmaking, in my opinion. I just needed to be a little bit more open minded, to abandon your preconceptions and judgments that one would normally make. And if anyone is going to find diamonds in the ruff, it’s going to be Quentin and Robert.”

Grindhouse hits theaters on April 6th 2007.

Standalone Grindhouse Movie Posters

Our friends at FilmIck have found some single bill posters for Grindhouse’s Planet Terror and Death Proof. The posters, which can be seen above, were created for the separate foreign release of the movies. Left click on the images for a higher resolution version. I find it very strange that the poster for Planet Terror promises the “coming attractions from Quentin Tarantino” when the Pulp Fiction director didn’t create any of the faux trailer included in Grindhouse (or at least as far as I’m aware). It makes me wonder if these posters are legit.

Grindhouse hits theaters on April 6th.

rosariosmith.jpgClerks 2 director Kevin Smith has been very vocal about his upcoming slate (or may-be he’s just very vocal period), which includes a horror film and a romantic comedy he wrote for Clerks 2 star Rosario Dawson. So when we asked Dawson about the project, we were surprised to learn that the Mallrats director hasn’t even approached her, YET.

“No. I keep hearing that. The Weinsteins have told me that, but I have not had that confirmed from Kevin so I’m not taking that on,” Rosario told /Film at the Grindhouse Junket. “I’ve been going back and fourth talking with him just in general. I think he’s phenomenal and I hope he’s there at the Premiere on Monday [which he was] because the last time I talked with him he was in Canada. So I can’t say. I know that I’m a rabid ridiculous huge fan of his and love him to pieces and would love to work with him again on anything. So I’ll put that out there and hopefully it will get back to him.”

Smith was recently in Canada filming a television pilot, so it even appears that the Rent star talked with him recently (and probably even more recently at the Grindhouse premeire last week). I just find it extremely odd that, at least according to Rosario, Smith has not mentioned anything to her about the script. It’s especially odd since it appears they have a personal off-business friendship/relationship.

Smith started talking about the supposed romantic comedy project last May:

“She knows I’m writing it and she knows there’s a part for her [Dawson],” said Smith.

Rosario is in Grindhouse which hits theaters on April 6th.
