Call this a perfect match: Whit Stillman (Metropolitan, The Last Days of Disco) is finally making another film, called Damsels in Distress, and indie darling Greta Gerwig (Greenberg, House of the Devil) says she’s got a role. Read More »

The hook here, I suppose, is that after a string of photos taken by photographers outside the production, we’ve now got the first ‘official’ look at Russell Brand and Helen Mirren in the remake of Arthur. Brand plays the Dudley Moore role — a rich, spoiled drunk — and Mirren takes over for John Gielgud as the butler-turned-nanny charged with looking after Arthur.
But beyond the photos are some new details that paint the production as a rather freewheeling one which, to my mind, makes it a slightly more interesting, and definitely more risky, proposition. Read More »

It’s breakout time for Greta Gerwig. She had a slightly (very slightly) more mainstream part than usual in Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg and a great little role in The House of the Devil (pictured above). Now there’s a report that she is in talks to take Liza Minelli’s old role in the brewing remake of Arthur. Russell Brand is already set up with Dudley Moore role, as a drunk, self-indulgent playboy who falls for a charming blue-collar shoplifter (that would be Gerwig), while Helen Mirren is reportedly taking the droll role butler played by John Gielgud.
On one hand, this remake seems utterly absurd and pointless. On the other, Gerwig is a fantastic choice for the part. She’s the first aspect of this equation that has made me thing, “yeah, ok, I might see that.” [Deadline]
After the break, On the Road takes another step, and a fashionable guy gets Smurfed. Read More »

A song can make all the difference to a trailer. This first footage from Noah Baumbach‘s new comedy / drama Greenberg could be seriously depressing, were it not for the bouncy ‘All My Friends’ by LCD Soundsystem. Ben Stiller, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Greta Gerwig star in the film that was called Greenberg, then was untitled, and is now apparently called Greenberg once more. Check it out after the break. Read More »

Repeat the following name after me three times: Ti West. Ti West. Ti West. Pray that Hollywood doesn’t tuck him into its throbbing succubus and then wring his brilliance out into its rancid, gold spittoon gifted by Dubai. With The House of the Devil, one of the most gorgeous, sexy, and vital horror films in recent memory, the 29-year-old writer/director has bowled me over. I haven’t been this excited by an independent film from a new, uncompromising voice in modern cinema since Jody Hill‘s The Foot Fist Way. If you follow my work at /Film, oh shit, you know what that means: I might proceed to drive my unwieldy love-cart off a cliff that is this oncoming jump…so if you choose not to follow, I’ll leave you with an echo. “Take those greedy scumbags at Platinum Dunes hostage, tie them up at the bottom of a Lake and force them to watch THOTD a million times…Happy Halloween.” The pool will be good for Mr. Devin. This is the best horror film of 2009.

These days, we find any stylish throwback poster for a genre movie refreshing. Mondo Tees can’t create them all. So, when the following poster reached our inbox, it was a nice surprise. What’s more, the poster is for a new horror flick that’s projected a nice dark stream of buzz online. Entitled The House of the Devil, it was recently acquired by the tastemakers at Magnet/Magnolia, responsible for the domestic release of Timecrimes and the upcoming Bronson, both /Film-approved. Judging by the trailer below, the film could be a sweet modern companion to The People Under the Stairs and ’80s crazed-righteous-caretakers horror.

The Hollywood Reporter have glad tidings for fans of Mumblecore pin-up Greta Gerwig, as they announce that she’s won the lead role in Noah Baumbach‘s upcoming Greenburg. Even though I’d expect the box office ceiling for this one to be low enough that the light fixtures will be resting on the floor, it’s still a big leap into the lower leagues of ET-friendly fame for the actress. Poor girl.
According to the Reporter, her Greenburg co-star will be Ben Stiller (I think we already knew he was on board, come to think of it) while Production Weekly also throw Jennifer Jason Leigh into the mix. Wonder how she got the gig? Ahem.
